The man kept looking at James dead in the eyes and sat down on spot. It was his way of telling James that even doing nothing at all was more productive than having a conversation with him.
They stared at each other for a couple of seconds, then James got bored of him and went to try his luck with the next person in line with the bedrock wheelbarrow.
“What for? Is yours rigged? The wheel not spinning?” James wanted to answer him but the man didn’t let him. “Listen, if you think anyone in this shithole will trade anything of his with anything of yours, … You’ve got those wires in that head of yours all mixed up. Especially with a deal like that. Why would you do a deal like that?” He shook his head. “No, no, no. Sorry. There has to be something else involved here. Something doesn’t add up.”
James took his words to his heart and thought about them for a second. These people would blindly follow their King’s lies, but wouldn’t exchange their wheelbarrows for one bearing a lighter load. These people were used to pain. Compromises. Unfair deals. Lies.
Walking up to the next person James had therefore come up with a lie of his own. “Listen. I’m collecting ore right now, and I’ll switch your heavy wheelbarrow for a lighter one for some sugar cane. What do you say?”
