Chapter 8
James quickly caught up with his soon, but didn't say anything. He didn't apologize for earlier, or even tried and change the topic. They just walked alongside each other in silence.
Not far ahead of them two men started yelling at each other. They couldn't make out exactly what it was about, but it had something to do with one's daughter. Other miners, Tom and James included, gathered round and formed a circle around them and near wanted a fight to happen. Some guards intermixed themselves in the circle also, waiting for the situation to unfold.
The two were just calling each other names and shoving for a while, but it didn't take too long for the bigger of them to realize his advantage and jump the smaller guy, knocking him to the ground. The other guy was more agile, though, and somehow made his way on top and landed a punch or two to the head. They went on wrestling and tumbling on the ground some more, when a guard approached them and ended the quarrel with a single swing of his nightstick across the big guy’s back, who was on the top at that moment. He rolled off the smaller dude and gasped for air. The guard holstered his nightstick, bent over slightly and told them to “Walk.”
