Chapter 4

Part 1

The town was nothing special – much like any other they have visited before. Wooden houses, saloons at every corner, general goods stores, plenty of drug stores and even some hotels. Only it had one key difference to all the towns they’ve already been to.

“What’s that you’re using for lighting? I’ve been meaning to ask before, but must’ve forgot,” James pointed at one of the poles that gave support to a brightly glowing crystal illuminating the streets. “Sure burns much brighter than a candle.”

“Because it’s not a candle.” The guard was scarce with words.

“So, what is it?”

“You didn’t have it outside, right?” The guard smiled slyly – no information ever left the dome. “Some mineral we discovered some ten years ago. You light it up like a candle, and it just glows up and doesn’t get hot,” the guard enjoyed this act of subtle bragging and kept going, “I don’t remember the exact name our miners gave it, something like Loomanyte or Lyterite, but it’s all the same if you just call them light rocks.” He enjoyed himself so much he just couldn’t stop talking – it was the first time he knew more about something than someone else. “And it just turns to ash when it burns, like a candle. Clean and easy.” His eyes suddenly lit up. “Oh, and they burn really slow. Like, these lamps will burn for over a week and they only have a Lyterite the size of a fist. I think we’ve had them for 23 years now, was it?” He looked at the other guard, whose face read clearly that he was less than fascinated by his passionate speech. “Oh, okay.” He tilted his head down and shut up.

“Thank you.” James finally got the chance to thank him.

The prompts are ready to put a spring in your step!

jumps too high and breaks both legs
Right... about that...

GET WELL SOON!

Dear Sir With the Broken Legs,
You have our sympathies for your unfortunate mishap during your exuberant springing! May your recovery be fast and painless! (Also we highly recommend that you don't make any sudden movements around the the gorilla/squirrel hybrid who delivered this card. This is his second day on the job and he can be a bit... excitable.)
Sincerely,
The Prompt Deliverers

We hope that you have enjoyed our new line of Freewrite Greeting Cards!

They are available in many assorted greetings for the front. Inside, the card is blank and you have 2 and 1/2 minutes to write your message before it turns into an envelope. Following that, our new gorilla/squirrel hybrid messenger will knock on your window to collect and deliver it to your recipient. Please note: it has recently come to our attention that the messenger is easily spooked by loud noises, sudden movements, corn dogs, and goldfish.

Have a lovely day and thank you for choosing Freewrite Greeting Cards!

Dead @brisby and your team,
thank you for the warning about your gorilla friend, though it would have been better had I not needed to open the letter first to learn about his... quick temper.
Instead, my tick caused him to go into a frenzy, and now not only are both my feet broken, but so is my left hand. Shattered from the elbow down, actually.
Thank you again for the kind wishes,
but please do not send any more messages.
Or at least not such messengers.

Take care,
@svashta

that would be very useful!! let's get the secret out of them!!

·

It'd be pretty cool, right? :D
Maybe someday... They bring it from under the dome. :p

Wow a bit of mystery and a reveal about our world! Very good stuff.

·

Well, I.. needed to justify the artificial lighting at the edge of the dome and the yellow glow of the town in the distance... and well, in the world of fiction... Everything is possible! :D
Thankfully so, haha
