This is my lovely portrait of Jennylyn Mercado who rose to stardom after winning as the first ultimate female survivor in the reality program called Starstruck. She wasn’t my favorite contender when the program started but later on she had proven her worth in the showbiz industry because of her outstanding skills in acting not to mention her beautiful classical beauty, good singing voice and for having a sexy and fit body. She has become one of my favorite actresses in the country.

Drawing Process

Before talking about the step by step procedures of making this art, here are the materials that I used to make this portrait:

1. A6 size Sketchbook
2. 7B Staedler Pencil
3. 2H Staedler Pencil
4. Kneaded Eraser
5. Spreader/Smudger

Now let’s get started. Have fun, everyone!

Step 1. Draw the outline of the subject using a 2H pencil. In doing that, it is necessary to get the perfect proportion and position of the subject. There are so many ways to improve your proportions such as by using grids, light box, and by freehand through constant practice. I am sure there are readily available and detailed blogs on how to do this techniques.

Step 2. Draw the face. In this step, I made sure that my 7B pencils were sharp so that I could get the best results I wanted. Another important thing is doing it patiently or not rushing on things out because I am working using an A6 sketchbook which is terribly small.

Step 3. Use a smudger in the face. Beware because this step takes a lot of practice until you perfect it or at least get it satisfactorily. Other artist also prefer pure rendering that requires a lot of control and discipline. So, basically I used a smudger to add values and depth on the face. That is very important because it will create a realistic effect in the drawing otherwise it will be flat and lifeless.

Step 4. Draw the hair. As for me, I still have not reached that point wherein I have mastered the hair. This is quite a long journey to take! But I still learned a new thing here. That the highlights of the hair are located on the shifts of curves of the hair in curly hairs. That is a good point to be noted.

Step 5. Draw the body. Basically the steps I made on the face is similar to this step. It is about getting the values and depth by smudging.

Step 6. Do the rest of the hair and final touches. Now we are on the last step. So, we needed to finish the hair then we will use the kneaded eraser to clean out dirts and unimportant smudges in our drawing and also to get highlights. I hope you enjoyed reading this. Big thanks!
