Because Chapter 3 got split into two chapters (namely 3 and 4), we are now at chapter 5.
The jail keeper raised his sight, but didn’t bother to move. He knew he couldn’t move the body alone and watch the prisoners. Instead, he just leaned back in his seat as far as possible and tried to catch a minute or two of sleep before the three guards return.
The inmates left the body intact, keeping distance of it not to touch the growing pool of blood, the scent of which had drawn the attention of a large crow. With its black beak and black feathers it was near impossible to spot one in the dead of night, but because it landed on the cell’s barred window its image was crystal clear. It squawked a couple times, and the superstitious few ran away from it thinking it was some kind of omen. The act frightened the rest of them too, thinking the arrival of the gunslingers and the crow was somehow connected.
Much to the horror of the prisoners, the bird stood completely still on the window ledge for several minutes, leaving finally when there was chatter heard from the upstairs.
