Chapter 60

Just then, Thorny and One Flare were also arriving on scene, but the tunnel they took put them in another part of the base. They had to make their way through a boiler room, down a hall, and around a corner to enter the central lab. They crept slowly and quietly to the corner. Thorny peeked around first, then pulled back and flattened himself against the wall.

“Holy merit badge, Batman!” Thorny exclaimed in hushed tones.

“What? What’d you see?”

“The girls look like they were tied up by a Japanese bondage master.”

“And you know how Japanese bondage masters work because…?” intimated One Flare jokingly.

Thorny frowned disapprovingly. “It makes perfect sense if you think about it.”

“What are you talking about?”

“The Germans and the Japanese?”

One Flare stared puzzlingly.

“The war?”

“So?”

“Well, maybe the Krauts picked something up from them. The Japanese are famous for that.”

One Flare sighed in exasperation and shook his head. “Krauts?”

“Just sayin’, man.”

“Thanks for the history lesson, but we need a plan. How many guys?”

“Same five. And a big blonde dude. Looks like the one from the show.”

“We’ll have to somehow cut the girls loose and get them out of there.”

“Lemme look.” One Flare took a peek and then withdrew.

“Whoa! Dude!”

“What?”

“Faro just popped out of the hole and addressed the big blonde dude. I didn’t hear what he said.”

One Flare looked again.

“Now they’re all six focused on Faro.”

“Jeezus that old guy has balls for a college professor.”

“I’ll say.”

“Looks pretty confrontational. Should we help him first or just get Carrie and Mary out of there?”

“How should I know? Hey! Let’s move up behind those tables.”

“Good idea.”

Thorny and One Flare crawled up behind the tables for a closer look.

Thorny mouthed to One Flare, “Where’s Kelly?”

One Flare shrugged. He looked again. Then he pointed at Thorny mouthing “you” and pointed emphatically at Carrie. He then pointed at himself and pointed at Mary. Finally, he held up a foot, pointed at it and mouthed, “shoes off.”
