Chapter 44
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, and I do mean ranch, Faro and his intrepid secretary were putting things in order for the Shorleys, er, I mean, Barstows’ return. When they were satisfied, they jumped in the old Land Rover (yes, that Land Rover) and headed off to the airport to pick them up, exactly as the Shorleys, er, Barstows, had done for them at the start of our tale.
When Frank saw the old jalopy (more a term of affection than fact) pull up, his eyes burst wide as he stared agape wondering if he could believe his eyes. Faro beamed as if he were behind the wheel of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang itself as he steered the jeep to the curb. Melissa dropped her bag and did a half squat, grabbing Frank’s arm for support.
“Could it be?”
“Yes, it could,” replied Georgeanne gleefully, and she jumped out to embrace Melissa. They both did a happy dance as they beheld each other.
Faro dismounted and stroked the fender as if he were the proud owner himself, and then patted it as if it were a good horse.
“Yessir. Rico kept ‘er in pretty good shape.”
Frank approached the vehicle thoughtfully, like a new car buyer, and stroked his chin. “Huh, new tires. Well, it’s the least you could’ve done.”
They betook each other for a beat and when a no longer repressible strong manly laugh erupted with the same glee infecting Georgeanne and Melissa. They embraced, then embraced the ladies, then had a big group hug and all was right with the world.
