Chapter 30

The choppers circled briefly and then swooped down in a spiral. Their arrival at the Shorleys’ property was expected. We call it the Shorleys’ place now instead of “The Hole” because the hole is gone. The choppers sat, rotors still turning ready for a hasty departure, like a scene from MASH.

Our old friends Müller and Edda were among the first to debark. They were met by the captain who was now the officer in charge.

“Very sparse camp for this kind of operation,” stated Edda.

The captain responded, “I took the liberty of anticipating a rapid departure and loaded everything except the bare essentials.”

“Excellent,” commented Müller. After the company stood together awkwardly for a moment he added, “Well? Where is it?”

“Over here.”

He led them to the spot where the hole used to be. They beheld the grisly sight of arms and legs protruding from the ground, and the colonel’s head, by now, had been mercifully smashed to put it out of its misery.

Müller smiled approvingly. “Now here is a man who understood sacrifice. Talk about giving an arm and a leg, eh, Captain?” He gave the Captain a hearty slap on the back. Then he turned to Edda. “All yours.”

“All right,” she shouted, “break everything down. You there, clean up this mess,” she added indicating the colonel’s remains. “You will move out within two hours and return to your previous assignments. Anyone who is not gone within two hours will join the colonel! None of this ever happened, none of you were ever here!”

The men responded with great alacrity. Furniture folded, tents collapsed, and anything remaining from water to food to blankets were tossed on waiting vehicles. Müller and Edda and their team boarded their choppers and took off. Shortly after that, the convoy of trucks left the Shorleys’ place for the last time. They looked like a National Guard unit out on maneuvers.

To be sure, the helicopters that carried our villains returned in two hours on the dot, this time with door guns mounted, locked and loaded. But there was nothing but a couple of prancing coyotes and some sage.
