Chapter 59

As the crew neared the reservation, the old shaman was waiting for them at the side of the road.

“What’s he doing here?”

“Can’t you guess? That is a decidedly good sign, when the local medicine man unexpectedly expects your arrival.”

Greaves stopped the vehicle and the old man climbed into the back seat with Thorny and One Flare.

“How did you know we were coming?”

“Carrie’s friends from the band told me. I thought you knew.”

“Oh. Yeah.”

“Go straight,” he indicated laconically.

“Straight? Where?”

“Why do you always have so many questions? I’ll tell you when we get there.”

They drove for a while when the old man spoke again, “Turn left here, on that dirt road.”

Greaves swung the vehicle across the road and headed up the dirt trail.

“Stop here. You boys get out.”

They did.

The old man spoke through the open window to them. “Behind those rocks you’ll find another entrance. It goes in level, not steep. You’ll need that. Wait 4 hours before you go in.”

The SUV drove off. The medicine man directed Greaves and Faro to use the tunnel at the top of the mountain as before. This time they got closer access using a jeep trail, but still had some climbing to do.

Greaves went to the rear of the vehicle and got out a Desert Eagle .45 and CAR-15 for the possible close quarter fighting that lay ahead.

“Need anything?” he asked the Doc.

Faro opened his jacket to reveal the .45. “I believe in going all in,” he said.

“Let’s go.”

They made their way the rest of the way up the mountain. Faro was huffing and puffing a little bit and paused to offer a comment.

“Why’d the old man give us the hard part and the young guys, who are in superb shape by the way, the easy entrance? What was he thinking?”

“He probably knows what he’s doing. It’ll become clear when we get there.”

They entered the tunnel. It was still a little slick from the poison ivy oil deposited from the smoke during that incident. Since no weather got into the shaft, there was nothing to wash it away. They watched their footing carefully, lifting their feet straight up and putting them straight down again to avoid sliding.

Suddenly, Faro lost his footing and started to slide on his seat all the way down the tunnel. Amazingly, he kept his cool. He held his hands out for balance and to control his speed and direction. The opening to the lab grew bigger and bigger as he raced down the slick.

Suddenly he shot through grating, which made a loud CLANG, and into the lab. Carrie and Mary’s eyes popped with hopeful surprise.

The Doc steadied his feet, stood up straight, and took a quick look around. “So, Reinhardt, we meet again!”
