Chapter 15

As the hole drew closer, they were abruptly confronted by a military cordon being erected. Frank slammed on the brakes. Troops were running to and fro engaged in the business of cordoning while the stuttering thunder of choppers roared overhead. The army had swept in from the opposite end of the property from the house and had gone unnoticed until the lights came on.

The group’s firearms were suddenly impotent. They were outmanned and outgunned. They debarked from the Rover and approached the cordon where they were stopped by an MP. He spoke into his headset.

Shortly, a tall gray-haired but wiry and solid looking colonel appeared and accosted them.

“Who are Frank and Melissa Shorley?”

They looked at each other and raised their hands somewhat tentatively.

“You have precisely two choices,” bellowed the colonel over the din. “You can either move to Australia and accept an annuity of $250,000 a year, or you can go to jail on trumped up drug charges.”

Faro flashed a gesture that involved wiggling his fingers in front of his breast but was too fast to really see, and then tilted his hat forward. “They’d like 10 years up front,” he stated.

The colonel beheld the professor quizzically surprised. He adjusted his hat, tugged at his uniform, and gesticulated in the manner of a third base coach, eyeing Faro suspiciously as he finished. He then addressed Georgeann.

“And who are you?”

Faro sidled up to her and said, “She’s with me.”

The colonel raised his hand two his shoulder gesturing to the man behind while simultaneously forming the gesture of benediction. Another officer stepped forward. “Captain, write these people a check for two and half million dollars.”

The captain opened a binder, wrote the check, tore it loose, and handed it to Frank, who couldn’t believe any of this was happening. Melissa slid up close, and pinching one corner of the check, tilted it up so she could see. Her jaw dropped. Frank, using his extended index finger under her chin, pushed it closed.

“You have 12 hours to vacate the property after which time you shall never return. Is that clear?”

The Shorleys nodded.

The colonel turned to leave, then stopped. He looked back over his shoulder at the quirky professor in the A2 jacket and Australian drover hat still dangling his .45 at his side. He winced and puzzled momentarily, shook his head, and receded into the blinding light inhabited by bustling silhouettes of men.
