Chapter 38

Our scouts had trained many days and countless hours to master crawling absolutely silently on leaf litter in the forest, so crawling silently and invisibly down a concrete shaft was no problem. They made their way a long distance, through a large fan that was currently powered off, and then came to the grate at the end of the shaft where they could peer inside the underground lair.

Lucky for them it was exactly where they needed to be. The crystal-like pyramidion was on a stand in the center of a giant room. Rather than bore you with a detailed description, just imagine any supervillain lair full of laboratory equipment and stainless steel appointments. The people inside however were not wearing orange jumpsuits. They just wore regular street clothes. Most of them sported short-sleeved white shirts with black ties and black slacks. The women wore navy blue suits with skirts and blouses.

Hovering above the crystal was a large lenticular disc 30 or so feet in diameter. On the underside was the image of the Black Sun. As they reconnoitered, the center of the sun opened up to reveal the interior of the disc, but was not in a clear line of sight for the trio. The scientists and technicians carefully monitored the ascent of the crystal into the center of the craft whereupon the portal closed again.

At that moment, the workers near the disc stepped back behind what looked a lot like glass walls, but not quite like glass walls, on either side of the disc and donned protective goggles and jackets. When they were all ready, one of the workers signaled a man at a control panel high up in the rafters of the facility. A red light started flashing and a noticeable but unobtrusive alarm sounded. The man threw switches into place, and then connected a massive circuit that discharged on the disc from every direction.

The disc hummed metallically, emitted a bluish-green aura, and suddenly shot straight up in the air and disappeared. The scouts were stunned and almost gave themselves away. They had seen every sort of mysterious and occulted art on a primitive and natural level, but had never seen technology perform such feats. Their minds were blown.
