뉴욕에서 잡지사 편집장을 하고 있는 애니는 야심으로 가득찬 커리어 우먼입니다. 성공을 향해 앞만 보고 질주하는 그녀이기에 그다지 좋은 엄마는 아닙니다. 독선적이고 카리스마가 넘치는 애니, 그런 그녀에게 딸 그레이스의 사고 소식이 들려옵니다.
딸과 마치 형제처럼 지내는 말, 필그림. 필그림은 딸 그레이스를 구하다가 큰 부상을 입게 되고 그레이스는 한쪽 다리를 절단하게 됩니다. 고통스러워하는 필그림을 보며 주변 사람들은 안락사를 시킬것을 권유하지만 딸과 거의 형제처럼 지내는 것을 아는 애니는 필그림을 살리기로 마음 먹습니다.
Horse Whisperer, 애니는 급기야 말을 치유하는 조마사를 찾아 필그림과 그레이스를 데리고 대자연으로 뒤덮인 몬타나로 오게 됩니다. 그리고 그곳에서 조마사인 톰 부커를 만나게 됩니다.
자연과 하나가 되어 살아가는 사람, 톰. 그는 말의 영혼을 치유하는 특별한 재주를 지녔습니다. 자연과 호흡하고 영혼을 나누는 톰, 그는 조금씩 필그림의 영혼과 하나가 되어가고 서서히 필그림의 상처를 치유하게 됩니다.
그리고 조금씩 서로에게 가까워져가는 두사람, 알 수 없는 감정은 몬타나의 대자연만큼 신비롭게 두 사람을 감싸게 됩니다.

서로를 알아가기 시작하며 애니는 왜 아내가 떠나갔는지 톰에게 묻습니다. 그리고 왜 떠나가는 아내를 붙잡지 않았는지 톰에게 묻습니다.
톰은 몬나타에서 태어나고 몬타나의 대자연과 함께 자랐습니다. 그리고 시카고로 대학을 가게 됩니다. 그리고 그곳에서 대도시에서 태어나고 자란 아내를 만나 몬타나로 내려오게 됩니다. 하지만, 대자연은 도시에서 태어나고 자란 헤어진 아내를 품어주지는 않았습니다.
깊어가는 감정만큼 대사가 주는 울림의 여운이 깊은 영화입니다. 마치 한 편의 시를 읽는 듯한 영상미와 대사들은 이 영화를 특징짓는 가장 큰 매력입니다.
마치 카메라와 자연이 하나가 된 듯 영상은 자연미가 넘치며 쳔연의 색감으로 생기있게 빛납니다. 줄곧 몬타나의 전원 생활을 쫓아가는 카메라는 지극히 인문적인 빛을 만들어 내고 있습니다.
원작이 소설인 작품을 각색한 영화답게 문학적인 미술작품 같은 영화입니다. 활자가 어떻게 이미지와 매칭이 되는지를 너무 아름답게 표현하고 있습니다. 대자연의 광활함은 영상을 통해 관객과 하나가 됩니다.
헐리우드의 전설적인 배우, 로버트 레드포드가 감독과 주연을 맡았습니다. 그리고 우리에게는 영화 '잉글리쉬 페이션트'로 유명한 크리스틴 스콧 토마스가 애니역으로 출연했습니다. 또한, 지금은 성인이 된 스칼렛 요한슨이 딸 그레이스를 맡아 열연했습니다.
