미국 독립 200주년을 기념하기 위해 복싱 이벤트를 준비했지만 상대 선수의 부상으로 대신 경기를 치를 사람이 필요하게 되고, 로키는 그 대상으로 지목이 됩니다.

권투를 좋아하지만 그저 하는 일 없이 나이만 벌서 30이 되어버린 무명 복서 록키, 그는 이 기회를 놓치지 않습니다. 자신의 모든 것을 걸고 그 경기를 준비하게 되는데요.

직접 실베스타 스탤론이 시나리오를 썼고 영화사에 자신을 주인공으로 해 줄 것을 요구했으며 덕분에 영화화가 결정이 난 후에 제작비를 엄청 줄일 수 있었다고 합니다.

아메리칸 드림, 영화의 메세지는 미국에서는 누구든지 무엇이든지 될 수 있다는 희망을 이야기합니다. 무명 시절 포르노 배우 생활을 했던 실베스타 스탤론은 이 영화에 무명시절의 이태리 종마라는 닉네임을 그대로 가져가 쓰게 됩니다.

뜨겁습니다. 탄탄합니다. 그리고 무엇보다 감동적입니다. 한 인간의 성공 뒤에는 과연 무엇이 있었을까요.
