모든 지식은 휴대폰에 있습니다. 연륜과 경력은 문서화되어 공유되어 집니다. 세상은 연결되어져 있고 자신이 원한다면 언제든지 필요한 정보를 얻을 수 있습니다. 믿고 따를 스승, 같이 흔들 깃발, 함께 부를 노래, 추구해야 할 가치는 대부분 개인화되었습니다. 삶의 경륜에서 나오는 인생의 참가치는 이미 세상에 나와 있습니다. 내가 중요하며 지금이 중요합니다. 더 이상 노인을 위한 나라는 없습니다.

총격 현장을 목격하게 되는 군 장교 출신인 르웰린 모스는 우연히 2백만 달러가 든 가방을 줍게 됩니다. 기뻐하는 것도 잠시 이후 모스는 끊임없는 추격을 당하게 됩니다. 그리고 그때부터 모스와 추격자, 그리고 이 둘을 쫓는 마을 보안관의 이야기가 시작됩니다.

아무런 이유없이 가스통을 가지고 다니며 마구잡이로 살인을 일삼는 추격자 안톤 시거. 전문 킬러인 그는 살인을 하는 것에 대해 아무런 죄책감도 느끼지 않으며 머뭇거리지도 않습니다. 살인은 그저 그의 삶의 일부일 뿐입니다.

그런 그가 추격을 시작합니다. 방해하는 이는 아무도 남겨놓지 않습니다. 그가 원하는 것은 2백만 달러가 든 가방일 뿐입니다. 누가 가져갔는지 확인했으니 수단과 방법따위는 안중에 없습니다. 그는 오더를 충실히 실행하고 깔끔히 일을 마무리 하고 싶은 전문 킬러입니다.

몇 대째 가업을 이어 마을의 보안관을 하고 있는 벨은 주변에서 일어나는 살인사건에 대한 실마리를 잡지 못합니다. 일정한 패턴은 지녔지만 살인동기가 없기 때문입니다. 그리고 너무나 잔혹합니다. 평생을 보안관으로 지냈지만 그에게 지금 일어나는 사건들은 모두 생경한 것들입니다.

영화는 느리고 고요합니다. 특별한 음악이나 액션으로 긴장감을 조성하지도 않습니다. 하지만 느리고 고요한 화면이 너무나 빠르고 소란스럽습니다. 영화는 스토리가 지닌 힘을 통해 관객에게 긴장감을 전달하고 스스로 서스펜스를 조성합니다.

무정형의 정형성, 아마도 이 시대를 수사하는 가장 정확한 표현이 아닐까요. 설명할 수 없는 것들이 난무하고 이해할 수 없는 일들이 일어나고 상식적으로 받아들일 수 없는 일들이 벌어지는 것은 어쩌면 더 이상은 통일된 이념과 가치로는 시대를 규정할 수 없기 때문일지도 모르겠습니다.

원작이 소설인 작품을 코엔 형제가 영화화했습니다. 원작도 훌륭하지만 코엔 형제의 뛰어난 연출력으로 소설에 버금가는 영화가 탄생했습니다. 코엔 형제는 자신들의 장점인 침묵과 고요를 최대한 살려 이 시대를 영상에 담아냈습니다.

노인을 위한 나라는 더 이상 존재하지 않는 걸까요. 그렇다면 젊은이들을 위한 나라는 존재하고 있는 걸까요. 하지만 여기에 영화인들을 위한 영화는 존재합니다.
