주섬주섬 담배를 물어봅니다. 망설이다 편지를 꺼내 봅니다. 한번도 만나보지 못했던 여자, 그 여자가 나를 사랑한다고 합니다. 배 한 척 가지고 고향에서 살고 싶은 그저 3류 건달일 뿐인 나를 사랑한다고 합니다. 내가 자신에게 어떤 짓을 했는지 알기는 하는 걸까요. 그저 돈이 필요해서 한 일인데요, 왜 이렇게 가슴이 아픈거죠. 그 여자, 나를 울게합니다.

세상은 오물통입니다. 더럽고 지저분합니다. 적어도 강재에게 그렇습니다. 하지만 그 안으로 진실한 아름다움이 찾아옵니다. 보이지 않기에 더욱 애절하고 절실합니다. 그리고 그 무엇보다도 환하게 빛납니다.

후배에게 무시당하기 일쑤이고, 조직의 보스인 친구에게는 대접도 받지 못하며, 하루종일 오락실을 전전하는 3류 건달 강재. 그는 배 한 척 가지고 고향에 내려가서 사는 것이 꿈인 그저 그런 동네 건달입니다. 그런 그에게 어느 날 자신을 사랑하는 여자가 나타납니다.

한번도 만나본 적 없습니다. 그저 돈이 필요해 결혼을 해 준 것 뿐입니다. 그게 전부입니다. 그런데 그 여자가 자꾸 눈에 밟힙니다. 투명한 눈송이처럼 시나브로 어느덧 마음속에 차곡차곡 쌓여버렸습니다. 그렇게 보잘 것 없는 인생에 처음으로 사랑이 찾아왔습니다.

한번도 사랑받지 못했던 사람, 누군가에게 한번도 존중 받아보지 못했던 사람, 그렇기에 강재는 사랑을 주는 것도 사랑을 받는 것도 모두 어색하고 미숙하며 서툽니다.

서툴다는 것은 어쩌면 가장 솔직한 마음의 표현방식이 아닐까요. 가공되지 않은 날것의 감정은 그렇듯 마음에 커다란 응어리를 만들어내게 됩니다. 그리고 무채색에 가까운 순수한 감정으로 사라지는 사람을 가득 채우게 됩니다.

파이란, 영화의 매니아들이 지금까지도 팬미팅을 가질 정도로 2000년대 초반 한국 영화계를 발칵 뒤집어 놓았던 영화입니다. 명배우 최민식이 3류 건달 강재를 연기했고, 홍콩의 스타 장백지가 파이란을 연기했습니다.

영화가 상영되던 시기 영화 '친구'가 전국의 극장가를 휩쓸었습니다. 덕분에 흥행에는 성공하지 못했지만 많은 이들에게 작품성을 인정받게 됩니다. 그 해 청룡영화제 감독상과 남우주연상을 수상하며 매니아층이 생길 정도로 생명력을 이어오고 있는 영화입니다.
