시한부 인생을 사는 변두리 사진관의 사진사 정원과 주차 요원 다림의 사랑이야기입니다. 삶이 얼마남지 않았다을 것을 알지만 정원은 다림를 놓아주지 못합니다. 크리스마스는 그토록 뜨거운 8월에 가장 아름답게 빛났습니다.

일상이 이토록 아름다울 수 있을까요. 8월의 크리스마스는 가족과 친구, 그리고 사랑에 대한 허진호 감독의 오마주입니다. 아무런 과장도 특별한 장치도 없이 오직 일상을 이야기합니다. 잔잔히 흘러가는 하루하루의 일과를 투명한 여과지에 담아 조용히 보여주기만 합니다.

느리고 느립니다. 하지만 깊고 깊습니다. 사랑이라는 감정은 어쩌면 이렇게 모르는 사이에 천천히 찾아와 깊어지는 것인지도 모르겠습니다. 그리고 삶은 일상이라는 항상성을 남기며 영원히 자신의 자리에서 환하게 빛이 납니다.

가장 인문적인 영화를 만드는 감독입니다. 작가의 자란 곳인 군산에서 영화 세트를 만들고 촬영을 했습니다. 초원 사진관, 허름하고 낡은 이 사진관은 두 사람을 이어주는 매개체입니다. 어쩌면 사랑의 마지막을 아는 남자 주인공 정원의 마음을 영원히 간직하고 싶었던 감독의 배려인지도 모르겠습니다.

명배우 한석규와 심은하가 정원과 다림을 연기했습니다. 잔잔한 내면 연기와 청초한 사랑이야기는 그 배우의 캐스팅으로 더욱 빛나게 됩니다. 이제는 은퇴했지만 심은하의 데뷔 시절 모습이 아직도 뇌리에서 떠나질 않습니다.

식물이 소요하듯 움직임이 없는 이미지는 세밀하고 정밀한 감정을 조용히 전달합니다. 두 사람이 처음 만나는 장면부터 데이트를 하는 장면, 그리고 정원이 감정을 폭발하는 장면등 모두 느리고 정지되어 있습니다. 마치 한편의 정물화를 보는 것처럼 세밀한 감정은 영상과 하나가 되어 영화의 깊이를 더해줍니다.

한밤중에 자신의 상황을 슬퍼하며 베게를 둘러쓰고 울고 있을 때, 차마 문을 열어 안부를 묻지 못하는 아버지의 그림자가 아직도 아련하게 가슴에 남아 있습니다. 때로는 보이는 것보다 단순한 형태가 더 많은 이야기를 하더군요.

인간에 대한 예의, 사랑에 대한 애절함, 그리고 일상에 대한 아름다움이 담긴 영화입니다. 흑백사진처럼 단순한 색감에 많은 것들이 담겨져 있습니다. 잔잔히 흘러가는 이야기는 어쩌면 잊고 있었던 우리들의 이야기일지도 모르겠습니다.
