한국형 서부극입니다. 정통적인 서부극을 지나 이탈리아의 마카로니 웨스턴을 담은 김치 웨스턴 장르의 영화입니다.

일제 시대 대평원 만주를 배경으로 보물 지도를 둘러싼 세 명의 주인공과 마적들의 이야기를 담고 있습니다.

장대한 스케일에 한번 놀라고, 세 명의 주연배우 캐스팅에 놀라고, 김지운 감독의 탁월한 연출력에 놀라는 영화입니다.

컴퓨터의 도움없이 대부분의 장면을 실사로 찍었습니다. 스탭중에 한 명은 촬영중 사망을 했고 정우성은 큰 부상을 입었다고 합니다. 무엇보다도 헐리우드에서도 보기 힘든 액션 장면을 담아냈다는 것에 경의를 표하고 싶습니다.

특히나 영화 후반부에 등장하는 대평원 추격신은 이 영화의 백미입니다. 시원한 추격신과 스피드한 장면 전개는 감독의 뛰어난 연출력이 더해져 한국 영화 역사상 찾아보기 힘든 명장면을 만들어 냈습니다.

장르의 마법사 김지운 감독, 그는 이 영화를 통해 한국 액션 영화 장르의 새로운 지평을 열게 됩니다. 기존의 스케일을 벗어나 거대 자본과 함께 섬세하고 스케일이 큰 대작을 만들어 내게 됩니다.

마케로니 웨스턴의 고전적인 영화, The Good The Bad The Ugly에서 스토리를 빌려오기는 했지만 김지운 감독 자신만의 스타일을 더해 한국형 웨스턴 장르의 영화가 탄생하게 됩니다.

이 영화는 미쟝센과 액션, 그리고 배우의 연기, 음악, 미술등 너무나 뛰어난 것들이 많아 어느 하나 빼놓을 것이 없는 명작입니다. 특히나 OST 음악은 영화의 품격을 올려주는데 커다란 역할을 하는데요.

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, 발표는 이미 됐지만 영국의 5인조 그룹 애니멀즈를 만나게 되면서 크게 히트한 곡입니다. 원곡은 템포가 느리고 아름다운 반면에 락그룹인 애니멀즈는 빠른 템포와 환상적인 기타연주로 전혀 다른 곡으로 재해석했습니다.

US 싱글 차트 3위, US 팝 싱글 차트 15위라는 업적을 달성한 후 곡의 명성은 전세계로 뻗어나가게 됩니다. 그리고 1977년 디스코 그룹, Santa Esmeralda에 의해 다시 불리워지게 되는데요. 실제로 우리에게 익숙한 곡은 이 그룹이 부른 곡입니다.

디스크, 플라멩고, 라틴 음악이 더해진 디스코풍의 팝 버전은 16분이나 되는 긴 곡이지만 70년대에 큰 히트를 치게 됩니다. 유럽의 여러 나라에서 1위를 기록하고 78년 빌보드 핫100에서는 15위를 차지하는 기염을 토하게 됩니다.
