Heart Of Darkness, '암흑의 핵심'. 영국 작가 Joseph Conrad의 자전적인 이야기를 담은 소설입니다. 10대때부터 원양어선을 타고 전세계를 여행하며 일찍 이국적인 풍광을 몸소 익혔습니다. 30대에 이미 선장이 되어 출세길에 올랐지만 30대 후반 돌연 귀국을 결정합니다. 그리고 소설로 생계를 이어갑니다.

유럽의 제국주의가 한창이던 시절 작가는 정치적 헤게모니의 모순에 대해 정면으로 파헤치게 되고 그 결과 '암흑의 핵심'이라는 소설을 내놓게 됩니다. 프란시스 코폴라 감독은 이 작품을 놓치지 않았습니다.

Apocalypse Now, 지옥의 묵시록. 미국에게는 명분없는 전쟁이었고 베트남에게는 독립 투쟁이었던 베트남전은 광기와 살육, 그리고 상처만을 남기게 됩니다. 전쟁의 참상을 잘 전달할 수 있는 방법을 모색하던 감독은 소설로부터 이야기를 차용하게 됩니다.

커츠 대령을 암살하라는 명령을 받은 윌라드 대위. 그는 캄보디아의 긴 강을 따라 그가 있는 곳으로 여정을 떠나게 되고 마침내 대령을 만나 전쟁과 혼돈 그리고 광기에 대한 충격적인 공포와 마주하게 됩니다. 커츠는 전쟁이라는 메타포입니다.

광대한 스케일과 세계 영화사에 길이 남을 명장면들, 은유와 상징이 가득한 이미지, 현실감 넘치는 리얼리티. 전쟁의 본질이 무엇인지 끊임없이 되묻고 있는 영화는 그 당시 미국 사회가 지닌 정치적 모순을 적나라하게 파헤칩니다.

마론 브란드, 마틴 쉰, 그리고 로버트 듀발. 헐리우드의 전설적인 배우들은 전쟁속에서 자아를 잃어가는 인간군상을 명연기로 풀어 헤쳐보입니다. 초점이 없는 흐릿한 눈빛속에 반짝하고 짧게 빛나는 것은 전쟁으로 인한 상흔뿐입니다.

3900만달러가 투입된 대작임에도 단 한 장면도 컴퓨터를 사용하지 않았습니다. 촬영중 스탭들의 분란이 일어났고, 미국 당국으로부터는 미정부를 비판하는 영화라는 이유로 아무런 협조를 받지 못했습니다. 필리핀 촬영지에서는 열대 더위와 말라리아를 견뎌내며 촬영을 마쳤다고 합니다.

하지만 결과는 달콤했습니다. 대작을 넘어 영화사에 길이 남을 명작이자 걸작이라는 평을 받아냈습니다. 1979년 칸 영화제 황금종려상, 1980년 아카데미 촬영상, 음향효과상을 수여하며 영화는 전설이 되어 지금까지도 회자되고 있습니다.

클래식 음악가 집안에서 태어나고 자란 감독은 전쟁의 참상을 역설적으로 아름다운 클래식 음악과 오버랩시켰습니다. 낭만파 음악의 대가중 한명인 바그너, 그의 음악 '발퀴레의 비상'은 평화로운 마을을 습격하는 장면에 활용되어 참혹한 장면을 아름답게 수놓게 됩니다.
