나는 그 여자가 싫습니다. 도저히 마음이 가지를 않습니다. 돈이라고는 한푼도 없고 나이도 많을 뿐더러 말은 아예 통하질 않습니다. 그래서 나는 애초에 이곳에 오고 싶지 않았습니다. 그녀는 내가 아는 여자중에 제일 답답한 여자입니다.

도시 아이인 상우는 엄마와 함께 외할머니가 계시는 외딴 시골로 오게 됩니다. 엄마에게 떠밀리다시피 외할머니 집에서 지내게된 상우는 모든게 너무나 무료하고 답답합니다. 무엇보다 외할머니는 상우가 아는 여자중에 가장 답답한 여자입니다.

배터리 살 돈이 필요하지만 외할머니는 돈이 없고 나이가 들어 귀도 잘 들리지 않습니다. 외할머니는 상우가 좋아하는 피자, 햄버거, 치킨같은 것은 아예 알지도 못하는 사람입니다.

하지만, 외할머니는 7살된 외손자에게 한번도 화를 내지 않습니다. 넓은 품으로 아이의 마음을 다독이며 시골 생활에 점점 익숙해질 수 있도록 마음을 열고 기다려 줍니다.

외할머니의 은비녀를 훔쳤습니다. 배터리가 사고 싶기 때문입니다. 방안은 롤러 스케이트장입니다. 외할머니가 바느질을 하건말건 상우는 아무런 관심이 없습니다.

프라이드 치킨이 먹고 싶습니다. 하지만 외할머니는 프라이드 치킨 대신 백숙을 준비했습니다. 물에 빠진 닭은 외할머니가 아는 닭으로 만든 최고의 음식입니다.

'미술관 옆 동물원'을 감독했던 이정향 감독의 작품입니다. 감각적이고 섬세한 대사에 마치 옆에서 이야기하는 것처럼 친근한 느낌을 주는 영상톤을 추구하는 감독의 영화답게 관객들은 자신도 모르는 사이에 시골에 있는 외할머니집으로 향하게 됩니다.

이제는 성인이 되어 명연기를 펼치는 배우가 됐습니다. 상우로 출연했던 유승호의 아역 연기가 너무나 자연스럽게 영화를 수놓고 있습니다. 답답하고 말도 통하지 않는 외할머니를 연기했던 김을분 할머니의 자연스러운 연기도 빼놓을 수 없는 관람 포인트입니다.

상영이 되던 해, 해외 유수의 영화제에서도 이 영화를 주목하기 시작합니다. 가장 큰 이유는 너무나 자연스러운 영화라는 이유였습니다. 누구나 한번쯤은 가지고 있는 어린 시절 외갓댁에 대한 추억을 너무나 자연스럽게 담아냈습니다.

격정적인 감정적인 동요도, 아름다운 미술도, 현란한 연기도 없습니다. 그저 언제나 그 자리에서 반갑게 맞이해주시는 외할머니댁의 모습을 카메라는 조용히 따라갑니다.

상우는 진정 외할머니와 잘 지낼 수 있을까요. 영악한 도시 아이의 시골 생활기. 외할머니가 그리워지는 영화입니다.
