어느 날 아빠가 사라지고 삼촌이 찾아왔습니다. 그리고 삼촌이 찾아온 후 집안에 이상한 일들이 일어나기 시작합니다.
박찬욱 감독의 헐리우드 데뷔작입니다. 선댄스 영화제에서 크게 호평받은 영화로 박찬욱 감독의 영화 스타일이 가감없이 표현되어져 있습니다.
2000년대 한국 영화가 세계로 뻗어나가기 시작하고 한국 영화 감독들은 끊임없이 헐리우드로부터 러브콜을 받기 시작했는데요. 박찬욱 감독 또한 마찬가지였습니다.
우리에게는 석호필로 알려진 웬트워스 밀러가 각본을 썼습니다. 알프레드 히치콕 감독의 영화에서 영감을 받아 쓴 각본이기에 히치콕의 인장이 많이 남아있지만 박찬욱 감독은 자신만의 스타일로 영화를 새롭게 재해석했습니다.
소녀의 성장에 관한 이야기입니다. 그리고 가족의 혈통에 관한 이야기입니다. 무엇보다 한 소녀가 어떻게 어른이 되면서 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는지에 대한 영화입니다.
스릴러 영화임에도 불구하고 공포스러운 느낌을 가지고 있습니다. 박찬욱 감독이 가장 좋아하는 영화 스타일을 그대로 유지하며 헐리우드 자본으로 한국 영화를 만들었습니다.
마치 클래식 실내악을 듣는 것처럼 아기자기하고 아름답습니다. 필름에서 풍어져 나오는 다양한 감성이 영상을 넘어 한 편의 고풍스러운 유화를 보는 듯한 느낌을 줍니다.
개봉 당시 수많은 영화인들의 찬사를 들었지만 흥행에는 실패했습니다. 하지만 영화의 작품성은 지금까지도 사람들에게 회자되고 있습니다. 섬세하고 독특합니다. 그리고 고풍스럽습니다.
명배우 미아 바시코브스카가 여주인공 인디아를 연기했고 매튜 구드가 삼촌역을 맡았으며 니콜 키드먼이 엄마로 출연했습니다. 세 명의 메인 캐릭터가 내뿜는 연기의 힘은 영상을 가득 채우고도 남을만큼 강렬합니다.
삼촌은 어디서부터 왔고 누구와 함께 하고 싶은 걸까요.
