미국의 재즈싱어이자 피아니스트 Nina Simon이 처음 레코딩을 했습니다. 그리고 많은 가수들에 의해 리메이크됐지만 크게 히트를 치지는 못했습니다. 이 곡은 영국의 5인조 록그룹 애니멀즈를 만나게 되면서 곡의 생명력을 얻게 됩니다.

처음 곡을 불렀던 Nina Simon은 하프와 오케스트라 반주와 함께 자신만의 창법으로 느리게 곡을 불렀지만 그룹 애니멀즈는 곡의 템포를 높이고 탁월한 기타연주와 오르겐 파트의 반복소절로 전혀 다른 곡으로 바꾸어 불렀습니다.

애니멀즈가 곡을 발표한 후 US 싱글 차트 3위, US 팝 싱글 차트 15위라는 어마어마한 기록을 달성하게 됩니다. 이후 1977년 디스코 그룹인 Santa Esmeralda는 이 곡을 다시 편곡해서 부르게 됩니다.

디스코, 플라멩고, 살사의 라틴음악을 추가한 디스코 풍의 라틴 팝 버전은 16분에 달하는 긴 곡으로 70년대 후반 큰 히트를 치게 됩니다. 이 후 유럽 여러나라에서 1위를 기록했으며 이듬해인 1978년 빌보드 핫 100에서 15위를 기록하게 됩니다.

디스코 버전의 곡은 우리에게 너무나 많이 알려져 있습니다. 특히나 한국영화에 '좋은 놈, 나쁜 놈, 이상한 놈'에서 OST로 쓰여 다시 한번 대중의 관심을 받기도 했습니다.

그룹 애니멀즈가 곡을 부르는 영상, Santa Esmeralda가 곡은 부르는 영상, 그리고 영화 좋은 놈 나쁜 놈 이상한 놈에서 곡이 흘러나오는 영화 영상을 같이 준비했습니다.
