Moses - Day 99
Death brings changes you can ever anticipate. I have to put down my husband’s cat today. He was sort of dumped on us a few years ago but he found his way into our hearts. It is especially hard because my memories of him are so intertwined with those of my husband. Sadly I will have to surrender my baby, Shadow, to the pound if I don;t find him a new home soon.
Pete called you Mo-Mo.
Matt called you Gary
(Cause you sounded
Like Sponge Bob’s pet).
But we called you ours.
But not always.
You had a full long life
Before we met you
And after you left that home
We thought you
Wouldn’t last long with us.
But you bounced back
And found new life
And new love with us.
Maybe it was
The fresh air and sunshine
From going outside
For the first time in your life.
Maybe it was the spark of energy
Found in a tiny kitten companion
That you learned to tolerate.
Maybe it was all the excitement
Of grandkids running in and out
And showering you with unwanted attention
But mostly I think it’s because
You attached yourself
To another soul
Who matched your aura
And deep down understood your pain.
I will forever remember you
Pestering him to let you sit
Beside him as we watched TV.
And he reluctantly,
But without fail,
Made room for you.
He even wore an indent
On one side of that chair
That will forever symbolize
To me the softness
And vulnerability
You both hid under
Your tough fascade
And though it pains me deeply,
Today I must put you down.
Shortly after you left your first master- he died.
Shortly after your new master left-you will die.

he was a wonderful friend!
This is the first cat post I ever made a comment on.
First the title, "Moses". This is the name of my second son. So the poem is already personalized before I began reading.
Second, the irony is too painful.
Sorry to make lite of your poem but a little humor is called for. I can't get Fred Penner's song out of my mind. Do you remember him? Another folksinger from Canada...
We had a cat that just popped up on our doorstep in 79 right after that huge snowfall. We tried all spring to get rid of it and to no avail. My dad started singing this song way too much.
