사생아로 태어나 생선시장에 버려진 아이, 장바티스트 그르누이. 불행한 운명을 타고 났지만 그에게는 남들에게는 없는 한가지 뛰어난 재주가 있었습니다.

후각을 통해 세상을 인식하는 그는 냄새를 통해 사물을 인식하고 주변을 알아가는 독특한 재능을 지녔습니다. 그리고 어느 날 여인의 알 수 없는 매혹적인 냄새에 이끌리게 되고 그것이 향수라는 것을 알게 됩니다.

향기를 소유하고 싶습니다. 향기를 만들고 싶습니다. 향기를 지니고 싶습니다. 그에게는 향기가 아무런 향기가 나지 않았기 때문입니다. 후각은 어쩌면 그에게 결핍된 향기를 대신해 신이 주신 선물일지도 모르겠습니다.

향수에 이끌리는 장바티스트 그루누이. 그는 향수를 만들고 싶은 마음에 당대 최고의 향수제조사 주세페 발디니의 후계자로 들어가게 됩니다. 그리고 그곳에서 평생 잊을 수 없는 향기를 알게 됩니다.

모든 시대극이 그러하듯 미술에 신경을 많이 쓴 영화입니다. 18세기 유럽의 모습을 마치 인상파의 그림처럼 풍부한 색감으로 담아냈습니다. 배우들의 열연과 스토리의 힘은 영화를 이끌어 가는 큰 힘입니다.

무엇보다도 후각이라는 독특한 소재를 영상화 시켰다는 점이 관객으로 하여금 전에 경험해 보지 못한 특별한 재미를 느끼게 합니다. 스릴러 물인데도 불구하고 한 편의 성장 영화를 보는 듯한 기분이 들 정도로 연대기적인 흐름을 가지고 있습니다.
