Katrina Halili

I started being a fan of Katrina Halili when I first saw her on TV. That was during her Startruck journey when she impersonated the funny and comical character of Booba which was portrayed by Ruffa Mae Quinto first. I fell in love with her since that. And from there and until now, she is my ultimate crush in the Philippine Entertainment Industry.

My fandom even raised to a higher level when I saw her life story in Magpakailanman. If I am not mistaken, she really did not audition in Starstruck. She was only invited to audition because a potential to rise to stardom was seen in her. And she did. She became one of the sought after kontrabida (female villain). She became Black Darna, and many other successful character portrayals.

She was also hailed as the sexiest woman in the FHM magazine for 2 consecutive years. That made her a fantasya Ng bayan. Katrina Halili faced a great controversy in her life. However, that made me love her more, she was so brave to admit her mistakes and she never hesitated to fight her rights.

Now she is seen as a villain again in a hit afternoon drama with Maegan Young. She is more than a decade industry already and she has already found a place in it.

Drawing Process

I am not ashamed to admit that I always need a reference photo when I draw. I cannot make images by just imagination. And I believe there is nothing wrong with that. So, yeah I used the internet and look for good photos. And recently, I like Pinterest because it gives me good quality photos such as this beautiful Katrina Halili

Since I am planning to do a portrait using graphite pencils, I edit the photos using filters. This will help me in applying the correct values. This is a good technique especially for beginners.

After that, I start sketching the subject on my drawing board. I used Staedtler 4B pencils for the sketching. This will give me good clear good lines that will guide me later on in my drawing. For the drawing paper, I used a vellum board. I started using vellum just this year and I fell in love with the quality of the paper or board. I think it's perfect for charcoal pencils, graphite, and color pencils.

I usually start my drawing in the upper left corner for me to avoid touching the drawing since I am a right handed person. When I was a kid, they told me to always start in the eyes but I don’t think it is a good idea especially when working with charcoal and graphite. Another technique I just adopted is using a clean spare paper to achieve a clean drawing outcome.

Here I am almost done with the hair. I still consider this as one of the most difficult part to draw. I am still learning with doing the highlights up to this moment. Prior to this, I used a burnished to protect some parts and keep it white. It worked in some parts but It is still very difficult to use since the burnished does not give a single mark unless you slightly tilt your drawing paper.

Then I proceeded to the face. I only made lines in the eyebrows and eyes since it should be totally dark and solid. It is very important to check your reference photo from time to time to check which part should be dark and which part should be light.

Then I work on the lips, the outer part of the lips seem to be bordered with a white line. So to protect this part, I used a burnisher. In the lips the midline that separates the upper and the lower lips should be dark and solid. So, I used the Staedler 7B to do this. Then, I used a smudge pen to smudge it out to the lips.

I continued on the other side of the face and a similar procedure was performed especially in the eyes and eyebrows. For the cheeks, I only slightly get an excess graphite in the hair. I do not like to put some solid line there because it will surely give a bad result.

Then I continued to do the hair on the right side. I made guidelines to know the direction of the flow of the hair. And yes, I am still learning on how to do it properly, but I am positive that I can learn that soon. I think that this kind of thinking will help me improve my creations.

Then, I started to worry because it was getting dark. When I take photos for the progression, the shadows will be visible something that is very not pleasing to the eyes. But I still continued doing it. (Haha) Yes, challenges really haunt you. So, just have the strength to continue.

Now we are very close to the end, I was working with the hands of our beautiful Katrina Halili.

Finally, I am done with my fan art. I really did my best on this art but I know I still have so many things to improve. For now, I am happy with the outcome. I know I have already improved and will continue improving.
