Fireflies: Pupa (book 2, entry 31) - Not nice to meet you - Again

As she listened to him "introduce" himself, she pieced together what had happened to his mind. If power was hidden still, it was submerged under the constructs of the life that he had created since the explosion. With the clues remaining in his house: class schedules stuck to the fridge, phone numbers of people he interacted with, wallet, checkbook, Aria's keys to her car, etc. - he had reformed some semblance of the life that he had assumed last year. After so many previous years of creating new personas to suit his purposes, survival mode must have triggered his innate ability to become a chameleon.
His college professor seemed to be most helpful, getting him a part-time job as a T.A. and providing some stability for him. She wasn't sure if he still had memories of anything more - or if it would eventually start to filter back in, but she only needed him to like her, trust her, and open himself to her. Positive that he would be able to withstand her experimentation, she had to be careful not to unlock anything more than what she needed.
She still needed more information from her mom. That would be tricky, as she would have to probe gently for certain information while allowing the critical details inside her own mind to remain innocent and unchallenged.
Bringing herself back to the current conversation, she agreed that they should spend more time together. She answered his questions, constructing a persona that would be suitable for her purposes. Immediately, she quieted the voice on her shoulder that reminded her how similar that was to Derek. She was tiring of constantly defending herself to that side of her conscience. If she resembled Derek for now, so be it. She didn't have to be alerted every time she made a step in his shoes.
As the conversation between them came to a close, she toyed with the idea of giving him a little taste of the other world.
No. There's too much on the line. I'll take my time and bring all these frayed edges of my life back together again. If it can't be reset, at least I can try to restore.

good morning miss!!!! so curious what you think about Derek - hehehehe cuz you havent read the first right? you only started with book 2? LOL Wondering what people who start with book two think of Derek and Talia.....
People from book one had very strong feelings hehehehe but I imagine that it might feel flipped if you joined in book 2 ! LOL

I'm going to make time this weekend to read both I promise. It's just been a hectic few weeks. We have some life changes to decide on and discuss and put in place but this weekend I'll make sure I leave an hour or so to read book one xx

i'm actually curious what you think WITHOUT going back! hahahaha It's almost like when you hear one side of the story and you're SURE that the person must be right.
but then - you hear the other side - and you think hmmmm now i'm not so sure.
So many people had such strong feelings for Talia - and stronger for Derek! LOL I wonder.... if you come into the story... kinda seeing this side of Talia and a different side of Derek... if people are less sympathetic to Talia and more to Derek.

OK... I haven't caught up the last three as I haven't had time but I'll read and give you a perspective and then rewsd one as well and give you another perspective? 🤔 Will that work? 😊

I know what it feels like to create a lot of persona to constantly suit a particular kind of life that will not really give away our one true personality really. I could relate to the aspect of this in this amazing chapter. Thanks for taking the time to write

and yes - Derek... well, he has lived a very very very long life and is only now in this new body.... but he has practiced many years of changing personas to become the ultimate predator (ask @enginewitty... hehehe he loves that quality about Derek!)
but this is very new to Talia
She has always been able to be herself , and comfortable to be so....
and she hates Derek for all that he has stolen from her..... so for her to be creating this persona - even as she justifies that she needs to do it, in order to control this situation for her own benefit..... she still hates the fact that she is becoming more and more like him.
but... as @bluefinstudios has noted.... after the explosion.... Derek affected Talia in a way that she will forever be "stained" by him.... and possibly influenced by him and his character for a long time...
hmmmmm I have to say... I hope she wins ;)

Hahaha well yeah I hit rep 70 a week ago and i must say it's been satisfy really hitting it, I feel good about it too, lol so in Earnest I could call Derek an immortal with a really intricate lifestyle even when I really need to go back to check out his really enigmatic character really, but I love the fact that Talia is trying to fight not to really embody him because it can be daunting to really suppress it. I'll be really reading more of this earnestly
Yes he is not quite immortal... But has the ability to repair and stretch his life :)
And yes.. she is trying to figure out what to do... But she believes she is more powerful since she is the one who survived the explosion the most.

yes - and he has already betrayed her and her family once! She is definitely playing a dangerous game with him. Sometimes we get ourselves into situations that we think we can handle.... and I surely do hope that she knows what she's doing!!!
