Art Ensemble of Chicago: Avant-garde jazz group

Founded in Chicago in the 1960s, the group has always been committed to the "Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians": Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future. From free jazz to contemporary styles, however, the African influence is unmistakable in their music. In part, they were completely wrapped with up to 400 instruments on stage, in addition to the colorful costumes and the paintings an impressive picture. However, the music, which is not easy to consume, is permeated by such tremendous power and joie de vivre that it is worthwhile to immerse oneself and to be catapulted back into the future. Unfortunately, Lester Bowie (1999) and Malachi Favors Maghostut (2004) have already passed away, but will continue to play forever in the form of their numerous albums.

Die Gruppe wurde in den 60'er Jahren in Chicago gegründet und war von Anfang an dem Motto der "Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians": Great Black Music, Ancient to the Future (Hervorragende schwarze Musik, vom Altertum zur Zukunft) verpflichtet. Von Free Jazz bis zu zeitgenössischen Stilen ist jedoch der afrikanische Einfluß in ihrer Musik nicht zu überhören.Teilweise waren sie mit bis zu 400 Instrumenten auf der Bühne vollständig eingehüllt, zusätzlich zu den bunten Kostümen und den Bemahlungen ein eindrucksvolles Bild. Die nicht ganz einfach zu konsumierende Musik ist jedoch von solch gewaltiger Kraft und Lebensfreude durchsetzt, daß es sich lohnt einzutauchen und sich zurück in die Zukunft katapulieren zu lassen. Leider sind Lester Bowie (1999) und Malachi Favors Maghostut (2004) bereits verstorben, werden aber in Form ihrer zahlreichen Alben auf ewig weiterspielen.
