Jazz Friday #8 "Billy Cobham"

Der musikalische Einstieg ins Wochenende wird mit der Reihe #jazzfriday von @schamangerbert und @w74 angeführt.

Als ich mich nach freundlicher Zusage vor zwei Wochen angeschlossen hatte, habe ich mich gefragt: Welchen Bezug und mit welcher ersten Platte habe ich persönlich überhaupt zu Jazz.

Diese abgegriffene Schallplatte, mit den abgedrehten Schlagzeug-Soli:

"Best of Billy Cobham", war die erste Jazzscheibe, die ich als Teenager in die Hände bekam. Lange nicht gehört, steht sie als Teil der Amiga-Platten noch immer neben mir im Regal. Außer dieser einen Platte, mit der alten Zusammenstellung, habe ich später nie wieder bewusst Cobham gehört und kenne mich auch nicht mit seiner Biographie aus. 1944 geboren, weilt er aber offenbar noch unter den Lebenden. Seine Songs auf dem Best of, von Amiga, sind legendär für mich. Es gibt also heute nur diese eine Platte von mir.

Schlagzeug und Gitarre setzten schon im ersten Stück, "Quadrant", zu einem musikalischen Supersprint an. Die E-Gitarre verglüht fast im Rhythmus und überholt alle anderen Instrumente geradezu selbstzufrieden. Ein explosiver, ja fast psychedelischer Sound, der mit dem nächsten Song in chilligen Funk über geht und doch später, immer wieder treibend, vorwärts schnellt. Das Schlagzeug gibt hier nicht nur Takt vor, es wird zum Hauptakteur im Dialog mit anderen Klängen, dem groovigen Bass, der funky Gitarre oder zu entspannten Keyboardsounds.
Das ist keine Musik, kein Album zum "Reinhören", die investierte Viertelstunde lohnt sich als Minimum.

First Jazz Record

Immediately I was in thoughts with this old and totally worn out record, with wacky drum-solos.
Best of Billy Cobham was one of the first jazz records I got my hands on as a teenager. Haven't heard it for a long time, it still stands next to me on the shelf as part of the Amiga records. Apart from this record and the old compilation, I never consciously listened to Cobham's music again and I am not familiar with his other biography. Born in 1944, however, he is apparently still among the living. His music on the Best of record of Amiga are for me legend

Drums and guitar set in the first track "Quadrant" to a musical super sprint. The electric guitar almost burns to the rhythm and finally overtakes all other instruments self-satisfied. An explosive, almost psychedelic sound, which changes into chilly funk with the next song and later rises up again and again drifting forward. The drums not only set the beat, they become the main actor in dialogue with the other sounds, like the groovy bass, the funky guitar and relaxed keyboard sounds. The album is nothing to listen to! You should bring a quarter of an hour (upwards). It's worth it.
