Today you can go with me, where some forms of jazz have their roots. We start with 4 ladies. Next week it will be the turn of the gents

Fatoumata Diawara (* 1982 Elfenbeinküste)

🇩🇪 Die heute in Mali lebende Fatoumata Diawara kommt eigentlich vom Schauspiel und nahm erst 2011 in Zusammenarbeit mit Roberto Fonseca ihre erste eigene Platte auf. Vorher Vorher war sie zu hören mit Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Bobby Womack, Oumou Sangare - um nur einige zu nennen.

🇬🇧 Fatoumata Diawara, who lives in Mali today, actually comes from acting and recorded her first album in 2011 in collaboration with Roberto Fonseca. Previously she has been heard with Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Bobby Womack, Oumou Sangare - to mention only a few of them.

Sona Jobarteh (* 1983 London)

🇩🇪 Die Musiker-Familie vom Volk der Griot stammt aus Westafrika, wo traditionell die Kora genutzt wird. Bei dem Instrument handelt es sich um ein 21-saitiges Zwischending von Steg-Harfe und Gitarre, welches eigentlich nur von Männern gespielt wird. So ist Sona Jobarteh eine der wenigen Frauen, die die Kora beherrschen. Als Komponistin war sie an mehreren Filmmusiken beteiligt, veröffentlichte aber auch nebenher eigene Alben.

🇬🇧 The musician family of the Griot people comes from West Africa, where the Kora is traditionally used. The instrument is a 21-string intermediate between bridge harp and guitar, which is actually only played by men. Sona Jobarteh is one of the few women who dominate the Kora. As a composer she was involved in several film scores, but also released her own albums.

Khadja Nin (* 1959 Burundi)

🇩🇪 Von Burundi in den Kongo wechselnd, um ihre Ausbildung zu beenden, musste Khadja Nin von dort wenige Jahre später mit ihrem Ehemann vor dem dort tobenden Bürgerkrieg nach Belgien fliehen, wo kurze Zeit später ihr Mann ermordet wurde.
Durch den Einfluss und die Überzeugungskraft des Musikproduzenten Nicolas Fiszman wagte sich 1985 Khadja Nin erstmals vor ein Mikrofon. Für die Texte ihrer Lieder (wenn nicht französisch) nutzt sie meist Swahili oder Kirundi.

🇬🇧 Moving from Burundi to the Congo to finish her education, Khadja Nin had to escape from the civil-war with her husband a few years later from Burundi to Belgium, where her husband was murdered shortly afterwards.
Through the influence and persuasiveness of music producer Nicolas Fiszman, Khadja Nin first appeared in front of a microphone in 1985. For the lyrics of her songs (if not French) she mostly uses Swahili or Kirundi.

Angelique Kidjo (* 1960 Benin)

🇩🇪 Sehr früh erlernte Angelique Kidjo Gesang, Tanz und den Umgang mit dem Banjo. Zusammen mit ihren Brüdern gründete sie ihre erste Band, musste dann aber 1982 nach Frankreich auswandern, da sie sich in ihrer Heimat beharrlich weigerte Loblieder über das eigene Land zu singen.
Nach der Ausbildung in Gesang und Jura wandte sich sie sich ganz der Musik zu und erreichte sehr schnell einen hohen Bekanntheitsgrad. Noch heute singt sie viele ihrer Lieder in Fon oder Yoruba (ihrer Heimatsprache).
Zu den Aufnahmen für das Album Djin Djin standen unter anderem die Kollegen/innen Joss Stone, Alicia Keys und Peter Gabriel neben ihr am Mikrofon.

🇬🇧 Very early Angelique Kidjo learned singing, dancing and how to use the banjo. Together with her brothers she founded her first band, but then had to emigrate to France in 1982, as she persistently refused to sing praise songs about her own country.
After studying singing and law, she turned entirely to music and very quickly achieved a high level of awareness. Even today she sings many of her songs in Fon or Yoruba (her native language).
To the recordings for the album Djin Djin the colleagues Joss Stone, Alicia Keys and Peter Gabriel stood beside her at the microphone.
