Herbie Hancock

My thanks to @schamangerbert, who had the idea to JazzFriday

Mr. Herbie Hancock. The man who added the special spice, called funk, to the jazz.

Let’s put it in a nutshell:
1940 a boy was born in Chicago, who not only discovered his passion for keyboard instruments very early, but (and he is not yet 30 years old) had the guts to join Miles Davis in his legendary solos without being asked or even (and this weighed even worse) to imitate him on the piano. The master was not enthusiastic about the young man's interludes, but about his skills.

Herbie Hancock's debut on the international jazz stage in 1962 was already marked by established jazz greats of the extra class. The album Takin' Off and My Point Of View was released with:
Dexter Gordon on saxophone, Freddie Hubbard with the trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren playing the bass and Billy Higgens behind the drums.

In the meantime he delivers with Maiden Voyage an album that contains a track with which his composer will probably be associated until the end of his days: Watermelon Man!!!

Obviously, the news quickly spread about what a natural talent had just entered the stage. As early as 1963, a certain Mr Davis knocked on the door of the young Mr. Hancock and left his offer to find his place in a combo that would go down in jazz history as the Miles Davis Quintet.
Besides Miles Davis (trumpet) and Herbie Hancock (piano) the following gentlemen did the honours: Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Ron Carter (bass) and Tony Williams (drums).

Herbie Hancock stayed with Miles Davis until 1968. They also noticed, that with the dramatic changes in society (Vietnam-War, Woodstock), jazz had to change in its original form. And so Herbie Hancock did not stay only behind a piano. He instead operated the keys of a Fender Rhodes. Funk was invited to unite with jazz.

After leaving Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock never joined a permanent band again. Rather, he focused on his own projects. Here is just a small selection of releases that not only regularly enthused the audiences, but also the critics.

  • 1971 Kawaida
  • 1973 Head Hunters
  • 1977 V.S.O.P. - A Tribute To Miles
  • 1983 Future Schock (incl. Rockit)
  • 1994 Cantaloup Islands
  • 1996 New Standarts
  • 2008 The Joni Letters

But now enough with the dry facts.

Mr. Hancock, would you mind?

The conservative jazz enthusiasts may please forgive me for this version of Rockit.
See you next JazzFriday! Wolfram

Great article @w74! Which is your favorite (or favorites) Herbie Hancock's Albums?
