McCoy Tyner (born 1938): Jazz pianist and composer

Tyner joined the legendary John Coltrane Quartet at the age of 22 and was able to use his playing to set impulses that are still considered a milestone in the history of jazz today. The musicians he played with and made recordings read like a history book of modern jazz and are so diverse that it's hard to pick one out. His playing with clay clusters on the piano is characteristic, but it does not leave the tonal space of the compositions but expands them in a way that creates space for more freedom. We experience some of the culmination of his work, in his words: ... a journey of the soul into new, unexplored territory ...

Tyner trat mit 22 Jahren dem legendären John Coltrane Quartet bei und konnte dort mit seinem Spiel Impulse setzen, die bis heute als ein Meilenstein der Jazzgeschichte gelten. Die Musiker mit denen er spielte und Aufnahmen machte lesen sich wie ein Geschichtsbuch des modernen Jazz und sind so vielfälltig dass es schwer fällt einzelne herauszugreifen. Sein Spiel mit Tontrauben, (Clustern) auf dem Klavier ist charakteristisch, jedoch verläßt es den tonalen Raum der Kompositionen nicht sondern erweitert sie in einer Art und Weise die Raum für weitere Freiräume schafft. Wir erleben einige der Höhepunkt seines Schaffens, in seinen Worten: ... eine Reise der Seele in neues, unerforschtes Gebiet ...
