Ronald Shannon Jackson (1940 – 2013) : American jazz drummer and composer

In the mid-1970s, various groups formed, trying to break out of the common systems of understanding music. After free jazz and rock jazz developed in the '60s, with Ronald Shannon a drummer comes in the limelight, who developed a kind of punk jazz. The development of this style eventually led to the founding of the Decoding Society around 1980. Listening to the quality of the recordings, one must take into account that these concerts usually exceeded all standards of volume and were very difficult to record. So I can well remember the concerts in Moers, which literally went through the body and were flooded with thunderous rumble of the polyrhythmic bass drums.

Mitte der '70er Jahre formten sich diverse Gruppen, die aus den gängigen Systemen des Musikverständnisses auszubrechen versuchten. Nachdem sich der Free Jazz und der Rock Jazz in den '60er Jahren entwickelte kam mit Ronald Shannon ein Schlagzeuger ins Rampenlicht, der eine Art von Punk Jazz entwickelte. Die Entwicklung dieses Stils mündete schließlich in der Gründung der Decoding Society um 1980. Bei der Qualität der Aufnahmen muß man berücksichtigen, dass diese Konzerte in der Regel alle Normen der Lautstärke übertrafen und nur sehr schwer aufzuzeichnen waren. So kann ich mich gut an die Konzerte in Moers errinnern, die förmlich durch den Körper hindurch gingen und von donnerhaftem Grollen der polyryhthmischen Baßdrums durchflutet waren.
