Stan Getz (Stanley Gayetski) - Jazz saxophonist (1927 – 1991)

Today I introduce a representative of Cool Jazz. The tone of Stan Getz on the tenor saxophone is instantly recognizable, always perfectly intoned, melodic, highly emotional without being ecstatic, focused and phrased in its own way. Like many of his colleagues, he also had problems with drugs and had to go to jail several times.

He was able to get rid of heroin, but he never got rid of the alcohol. At the age of 64, he lost the battle against liver cancer, but was still able to perform for months before. We first hear his biggest hit "The Girl from Ipanema" and then a rare recording with an all-star setting. Afterwards, two complete concerts provide a comprehensive overview of his work.

Heute stelle ich einen Vertreter des Cool Jazz vor. Der Ton von Stan Getz auf dem Tenorsaxophon ist sofort erkennbar, immer perfekt intoniert, melodisch, höchst emotional ohne ekstatisch zu sein, konzentriert und in seiner eigenen Art phrasiert. Wie viele seiner Kollegen hatte auch er Probleme mit Drogen und mußte mehrere Male ins Gefängnis.

Von Heroin konnte er sich befreien, den Alkohol wurde er aber niemals los. Mit 64 Jahren verlohr er den Kampf gegen den Leberkrebs, konnte aber noch Monate vorher Auftritte absolvieren. Wir hören zuerst seinen größten Erfolg "The Girl from Ipanema" und dann eine rare Aufnahme mit einer Allstarbesetztung. Im Anschluß geben zwei vollständige Konzerte einen umfassenden Überblick über sein Schaffen.
