Entry 16

Finalizing the decision was freeing in a way. Instead of thinking of life as an unending string of meaningless days, she could now just countdown the days left in her trip and make the best of it. Rid the world of one more evil and rest. For a moment her conscience tugged at her, reminding her that Derek had not known her the last time he saw her.

She dismissed the reality of that notion, and fueled her vendetta. She didn't care if he had forgotten her. That technicality didn't excuse what he did when he had been aware. She would make sure he would remember before she was finished.

Running her fingers across her scalp and giving her hair a good shake, she inhaled deeply and refocused on the day before her. As she scanned her surroundings, she spied Caleb tightening his saddle. A quick click of her teeth and a gentle squeeze with her calves brought horse and rider trotting over to him.

"Howdy, Partner."

Caleb looked up into her face, shielding his eyes from the morning sun peeking out from behind her head. He chuckled lightly and tipped his hat in her direction, imitating his best cowboy impression.

"Howdy, yourself, Ma'am. Mighty fine day we have here in these Georgian hills."

She was going to let her guard down. The next few days were going to be about remembering what it felt like to be alive. Caleb would be the last one to experience all that she was, and she decided against holding back.

Her amusement at his cowboy twang shone across her face and took Caleb's breath away. His heart stirred beneath his rib cage, feeding his need to know more about this old, unusual soul trapped in a young woman's body. Hopefully, the next few days would reveal more of her mysteries to him.
