Weekly Overview of Translation Category - Week 25, 2019 | One Year Celebration . . . Read on to the end!

As a Community Manager for @Utopian-io and @Davinci.witness, I will continue to write these weekly reports for the translation category. The report will include:

  1. Translators' Activities
  2. Moderators' Activities

In this report, I will follow the format of the other Utopian categories to provide the following information:

  • Graphs of the translators' contributions
  • Graphs of language teams contributions
  • Charts of comparisons of the different weeks
  • Graphs of moderators' scoring
  • Average score of the category & comparisons
  • Showcase the staff pick of the week if there is one
  • Update the Translators Members List
  • Upcoming Events

Summary Overview for Week 25: June 13 - 20, 2019

A. Contributions Summary

1. Translators' Contributions for This Week

This week, we have 25 Contributions

In the translation category, it is important that we monitor the contributions submitted by the different language teams as translators work together in teams.

Therefore, the statistics and graphs will not show the contributions of the individual translators but will display the 19 language teams instead.

The following chart shows the distribution of contributions of the 19 different language teams.

Analysis:

From the graph, we can see that the distribution of contributions from the different language teams is looking more even. In this way, all language teams have an equal chance of getting rewarded for their translations.

  • Spanish team leads with 5 contributions.
  • Followed by Serbian team with 4 contributions.
  • Then Yoruba, Arabic, Portuguese and Turkish teams with 3 contributions each.
  • There are no contributions from Greek, Dutch, Polish, Italian, French, Vietnamese, Slovenian, German, Russian and Korean teams.

Please Note:

  • These graphs are created so that we can see the activity of each language team. On Feb 10th, @Davinci.witness Management team set up a new rule with a cap of 5 contributions from each language team. The reason behind this rule is to give all language teams equal chances to contribute to the translation category.

  • Therefore, it is important to note that the teams are not competing with each other to produce the greatest number of contributions.

  • Our aim is to have all language teams producing an equal amount of 5 translations consistently.


2. Total Contributions of 4 Weeks

We will compare the total contributions in the translation category for 4 weeks time period.

Week 22: 36 contributions
Week 23: 34 contributions
Week 24: 30 contributions
Week 25: 25 contributions

Analysis:

  • There is an decrease of 5 contributions this week.
  • It seems that the contributions are getting less and less by the weeks in the month of June.
  • The most ideal situation is to have all the color of the language teams with an equal amount of 5 contributions.
  • Right now, the color is still not very even.
  • The teams that have a good amount of block of contributions: Serbian, Turkish, Yoruba, and Spanish Teams
  • Some teams have a little color of blocks. We need to encourage these language teams to be more active in their contributions.


3. Four Weeks Comparisons for Each Language Team

The following table shows the number of contributions in the different language teams for 4 weeks.

Analysis:

There are 4 color bars for each language teams with each bar representing the 4 different weeks. In this way, we can get a clearer indication of which teams are getting more engaged and which teams are getting less engaged.

  • The following teams show signs of good engagement: Spanish, Yoruba, Serbian, Portuguese, and Turkish teams.
  • The following teams show signs of getting more engaged: Filipino and Arabic teams.
  • The following team shows signs of getting less engaged: Chinese team.
  • The following teams show no signs of engagement: Greek, Dutch, Polish, Vietnamese, Slovenian, German, and Hebrew teams.

4. Overall Growth of Each Language Team for 4 weeks

It is important that we measure the language team activities not just by one week but to see their monthly overall performance.

The following graph shows the total number of contributions of the 19 language teams in the past 4 weeks

Analysis

From the chart, we are able to see the situation of each language team in the spread of 4 weeks.

You can see the consistencies by looking at the colors of the 4 different weeks of contribution!

  • Spanish, Yoruba, Serbian, Portuguese and Turkish teams are active in their contributions in a consistent manner of about 4 to 5 contributions each week.
  • Filipino and Arabic teams are becoming more active in their contributions.
  • There is little growth with the Chinese, Italian, French, Russian and Korean teams.
  • There is no growth in Greek, Dutch, Polish, Slovenian, Vietnamese, and German teams.

B. Language Moderators' Scoring - Week 25, 2019

For the scoring distribution, we have 30 moderators, so I need to group the scoring into language teams so that you can see the analysis clearer in the distribution of scoring.

1. Statistics Showing Scores Given by our 30 Moderators in the Language Teams

For this week's report, I will continue to show also the following statistics requested by different people.

There are 3 columns:

  • A - the moderator
  • B - the language team
  • C - the scores given by the moderator

From this table, you will be able to see who the moderators are giving the scores for the language teams.

The following chart shows the distribution of scores of all the teams.

The X-axis is not able to list out all the languages for each score and only able to list out the language for every other 2 scores shown.

3. Analysis

  • The highest score this week is 92 given by the Hebrew moderator.
  • The lowest score this week is 0 given by the Spanish moderator.
  • About 30% of the contributions received scores between 80 to 100
  • About 30% of the contributions received scores between 70 to 80
  • About 40% of the contributions received scores below 70.

This week's scoring shows that the translators are doing good work: 30% scores higher than 80.

About 40% of the contribution scores below 70. This percentage is too high. For translators scoring below 70 consistently, they need to be paused to get remedial training.

Ideally, we want every translator to score above 70 so that we have a high-quality translation in all the contributions.

4. The average score of the Contributions is 69.

Last week, the average score was 72. The average score for this week is a bit on the low side. This is due to the fact that there is a "zero" score in one of the translation. Other than that, the translation teams are still able to maintain the minimum requirement expected of them.

D. Events

The Davinci-Utopian front-end is currently down. All translators and LM need to use Steempeak to set the beneficiaries (@utopian.pay 5% and @davinci.pay 10%). Please use the tags #utopian-io and #translations in your post.

@Glastar is looking for translators to form a Japanese team. If anyone is interested in translating Open Source projects, please contact @Davinci.witness team.

E. Tip of the Week | One Year Celebration

I remember last year at this time, I was appointed to be the community manager of the Translation category for both the Utopian and Davinci communities. So many people were waiting for the door to open to start translating open-source projects again. When the door opened on that first day on the Davinci discord channel, the enthusiasm was so high, just like what you normally see in a class reunion. Everyone was ready to start translating. We had heavy responsibilities. For the first 4 months, I hardly slept. I was committed to making the translation category work and not repeat our mistakes again.

A year has passed and we have proven ourselves worthy to this mission. Many language teams are still here actively translating open source projects in a regular and consistent manner. We really can't take these things for granted because I witnessed the times when translation had to pause repeatedly due to users abusing the system. Today, everything is in good order and we are moving forward steadily. All this is possible because of the great supervision work done by the @Davinci.witness team in managing the 19 language teams.

Believe me, I have seen people come and go, and it is difficult to see teams remaining intact and moving forward in the way I had seen in the translation category. Thank you all for your continual support in this past year.

So for the tip of this week, I want to remind all our Language Managers that you have been given the greatest privilege in leading your team for your language. It is fantastic to know that we can have a part in getting many open-source projects going global.

I know many language moderators are busy with their own lives. It will be great if we can take this week to re-evaluate our own teams and do some restructuring if there are inactive teammates who are no longer interested in the translation work.

Please contact the @Davinci.witness team in the discord channel so that we can recruit other people to fill in the gaps that are in your teams.

Today, let us celebrate and cheer @Utopian.io in successfully collaborating with @Davinci.witness team for moving the translation category forward steadily in providing localization services to relevant open source initiatives. So far, more than 2.5 million words have been translated.

I am glad that the Translations category has been active for one year with no abuse issues. Also, it is good that you guys want to work on the teams. Many teams have been inactive for a while, and they need quick changes.
