Weekly Overview of Translation Category - Week 8, 2019

in #iamutopian5 years ago

As a Community Manager for Utopian, I will continue to write these weekly reports for the translation category. The report will include:

  1. Translators' Activities
  2. Moderators' Activities

In this report, I will follow the format of the other Utopian categories to provide the following information:

  • Graphs of the translators' contributions
  • Graphs of language teams contributions
  • Charts of comparisons of the different weeks
  • Graphs of moderators' scoring
  • Average score of the category & comparisons
  • Showcase the staff pick of the week if there is one
  • Update the Translators Members List
  • Upcoming Events

Summary Overview for Week 8: Feb 14 - 21, 2019

A. Contributions Summary

1. Translators' Contributions for This Week

This week, we have 25 Contributions

In the translation category, it is important that we monitor the contributions submitted by the different language teams as translators work together in teams.

Therefore, the statistics and graphs will not show the contributions of the individual translators but will display the 19 language teams instead.

The following chart shows the distribution of contributions of the 19 different language teams.

Analysis:

  • Serbian team leads this week with 6 contributions.
  • Followed by Filipino team with 3 contributions.
  • Then Spanish team.
  • There are no contributions from Greek, Polish, Slovenian, Portuguese, Hebrew, Russian and Korean teams.

Please Note:

  • These graphs are created so that we can see the activity of each language team. On Feb 10th, Davinci Management team set up a new rule with a cap of 5 contributions from each language team. The reason behind this rule is to give all language teams equal chances to contribute to the translation category.

  • Therefore, it is important to note that the teams are not competing with each other to produce the greatest number of contributions.

  • The most ideal situation is to have all language teams producing an equal amount of 5 translations.

This week's graph shows that the Serbian team has 6 contributions which exceeded the 5 contributions cap.

But then we need to realize that the calculation of the 5 contributions cap should go from Sunday to Sunday according to the Davinci Management team. The Utopian report is from Thursday to Thursday, therefore I will let the Davinci Management team look into this matter according to their report rules.

Surprisingly, the Spanish team has only 2 contributions. All along the Spanish team has been the hardest working team for translation doing up to 10 contributions before the 5 contributions cap. Let's see what happens next week.

The Filipino team seems to be doing well and quite consistent in their weekly contributions.

Other language teams seem to be able to only make 1 or 2 contributions per week. We need to see how to motivate them to work up to 5 contributions per week.

It is good to see the Turkish team starting wihth their contributions. This team has just been newly set up in the last 2 weeks.

7 Language teams have no contributions this week. This is not a good sign as they came in with excitement during the recruitment. We need to see how to motivate these language teams.

2. Total Contributions of 4 Weeks

We will compare the total contributions in the translation category for 4 weeks time period.

Week 5: 39 contributions
Week 6: 38 contributions
Week 7: 29 contributions
Week 8: 25 contributions

  • Even though new language teams were added and some language teams restructured, there were even less contributions this week.

  • The Spanish team ended up only 2 contributions this week.

  • We need to encouarge each language team to contribute more.

3. Four Weeks Comparisons for Each Language Team

The following table shows the number of contributions in the different language teams for 4 weeks.

Analysis:

There are 4 color bars for each language teams with each bar representing the 4 different weeks. In this way, we can get a clearer indication of which teams are getting more engaged and which teams are getting less engaged.

  • The following teams show signs of good engagement: Serbian and Filipino teams. It would be great if Filipino team can increase from 3 contributions to 5 contributions per week.
  • The following teams show signs of getting more engaged: Chinese, Italian, Yoruba, Vietnamese.
  • The following teams show signs of getting less engaged: Dutch, Polish
  • The following teams show no signs of engagement: Greek, Hebrew and Korean teams. The Korean team just started 2 weeks ago, therefore the team may need more time to get into the routine.

4. Overall Growth of Each Language Team for 4 weeks

It is important that we measure the language team activities not just by one week but to see their monthly overall performance.

The following graph shows the total number of contributions of the 17 language teams in the past 4 weeks

Analysis

From the chart, we are able to see the situation of each language team in the spread of 4 weeks:

  • Spanish & Serbian teams are most active in a consistent manner
  • Followed by the Filipino team
  • And then the Portuguese team
  • There is little growth in Polish and Slovenian teams
  • There is no growth in Greek and Hebrew teams

We hope both Spanish and Serbian teams will continue to contribute 5 translations per week as they have proven to be the most hard working teams all along.

The Filipino team is doing well also. The Portuguese team was restructured last month, so they are doing quite well in the overall contributions.

B. Language Moderators' Scoring - Week 8, 2019

For the scoring distribution, we have 30 moderators, so I need to group the scoring into language teams so that you can see the analysis clearer in the distribution of scoring.

1. Statistics Showing Scores Given by our 30 Moderators in the Language Teams

For this week's report, I will continue to show also the following statistics requested by different people.

There are 3 columns:

  • the moderator
  • the language team
  • the scores given by the moderator

From this table, you will be able to see who the moderators are giving the scores for the langauge teams.

We used to have a great amount of contributions from the Spanish teams, and this week, with the only two contributions from the Spanish translators, the scores are quite low: 67 and 51. We need to investigate into the Spanish team to see what is happening to the team and why the quality has gone down.

The following chart shows the distribution of scores of all the teams.

2. Chart showing the distribution of scores

The X-axis is not able to list out all the languages for each score and only able to list out the language for every other 2 scores shown.

3. Analysis

  • The highest score this week is 90 given by the Serbian moderator.
  • The lowest score this week is 51 given by the Spanish moderator.
  • About 20% of the contributions receive scores between 80 to 100
  • About 55% of the contributions receive scores between 70 to 80
  • About 25% of the contributions receive scores below 70.

This week's scoring shows that the translators are doing quite good work: 75% scored above 70.

Ideally we want every translator to score above 70 so that we have high quality translation in all the contributions.

Only 25% translators fall below the 70. These are mainly found in the Arabic, Spanish and German translators.

4. The average score of the Contributions is 75.5.

Last week, the average score was 73.

This week, there is an improvement in the overall quality of the translation work.

Since these translators have all been screened to do translation work, the average score should be above 70 to show the quality standard.

So far, we are reaching the minimal standard.

C. Staff Pick This Week

Even though there is a high score of 90 given by the Serbian team that deserve staff pick but the Davinci Team Management has some concerns in the last month regarding the scoring given by this team, so the matter is under investigation.

D. Translation Teams - 109 Members List

Please Note: There is no recruitment done this week!

E. Upcoming Events

Audit teams have been hired to assess the accuracy of scoring of all the language teams. So far, the results look positive and that most teams are doing well.

Please also note that the Davinci-Utopian front-end is currently down. All translators and LM need to use Steempeak to set the beneficiaries (@utopian.pay 5% and @davinci.pay 10%). Please use the tags #utopian-io and #translations in your post.

That's it for this week,

This is another excellent weekly report. It shows a comprehensive coverage of the category. The report is well-written, nicely illustrated, and of course, informative.

The chart for the total contributions received is gradually dropping. I am surprised that the Spanish team submitted only two contributions. I think the new rules have their own effect on this. However, I still believe things will get balanced up when other non-active teams become active.

Thanks for the update. Have a great week!

Please note that while the CM hasn't changed the footer, I am not scoring #iamutopian posts based on the questionnaire. They have their own metric, and that will be the case until we go live with the new guidelines and new questionnaire, which will be comprehensive enough to reflect these types of posts.

Thank you for your review, @tykee! Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much @rosatravels for another great weekly translations report!

About the weekly number of contributions cap and different Utopian - DaVinci "week counting" - I addressed this issue in the Discord channel, and people from DaVinci confirmed that cap should be applied to DaVinci weeks, from Sunday to Sunday.

This inevitably leads to confusions when translation report for a period from Thursday to Thursday is generated, since it's easy to happen that some of our 5 contributions per week (from Sunday to Sunday) are distributed in such manner that some "excess contribution" appears in Utopian weeks.

Of course, this can be easily checked by assessing weekly reports @alexs1320 and I are filling out in Excel sheets you have, as well as in our blogs.

I think that the new category you introduced in these reports regarding statistics of scores given by Moderators is great, however, I would just have one suggestion, and that would be introducing the fourth column with number of words of each contribution, since certain contributions contain more than minimal 1000 words, and that influences the final score.

In this way, the statistics will represent more accurately the scoring of Moderators, because without having that information, the statistics could potentially be interpreted in the wrong manner.

Hi @scieneangel,

Thanks for the feedback. Your team is actually fine within the 5 cap limits because the calculation would follow the Davinci weeks as the rule is set by the Davince management team. It is too bad that there is a difference in the calculation from Thurs to Thurs (Utopian) and Sun to Sun (DaVinci). In that sense, even if there is +1 or -1, we can take that into consideration because of the difference in calculation.

For now, I will put the stats of scores on the report since I need to create that table for the score distribution. As for putting in the 4th column, it takes a lot of manual work to key in the number of words as the Utopian bot doesn't give the number. But I believe DaVinci team has the bot recording the number of words in their report. But perhaps in the analysis, I will notate the number of words for those high score contributions so that people know why the scores are higher. That's fair enough.
