One photo every day: Palm Sunday – Easter witches (273/365)

in #onephotoeveryday7 years ago

Hello again!

For a reason or another, Flickr refused to receive the uploaded images, all uploads ending up timing out. I had to use Google Images for these photos. That kind of sucks, since it kind of messes up links.

Wizards going out to sell magical twigs for candy and stuff.

Our Finnish (pagan) Easter witch tradition comes similar to the Celtic Halloween tradition in that the kids go out dressed up as witches and wizards, and instead of begging for treats, try to get people to buy their twigs for sweets and goods.

I don't really know if trick-or-treaters have rhymes but our Easter witches do:

"Virvon varvon tuoreeks terveeks, tulevaks vuodeks, vitsa sulle palkka mulle!"

^--- that's the simplest one, while there are some older and even better rhymes, but I can't remember them all. I searched the web and found plenty of cool rhymes, but they may be somewhat difficult for today's kids to learn by heart.

The same goes a bit like this in English:

"[casting spells] of good and health for the coming year, twig for you pay for me"

(Virvon varvon is a bit like a spell casting; e.g. "abracadabra", although it could be understood as "I'm casting a spell with this twig".)

Anyway, our boys did good, and here's their earnings for the day:

Pays well to be a wizard...

That's it for today...

I'll be back tomorrow with new photos. Can't do today's weeklie today because of tiredness, but I'll try creating it also tomorrow.

Haha, many years ago, whenever children rang our house's door bell on Halloween and recited these rhymes, my mother always opened the door and advised them to stop eating sweets for the sake of their teeth. And quite often they didn't want to eat their collected sweets anymore.

I hope your children will enjoy the sweets! :)

Haha, yes! She told them so in a friendly way.

Well, your mother sure has a way with children, then.

I remember having the following dialogue with my daughter who once again wanted to eat an ice cream instead of meat soup at the dinner table when she was four.

Milla: I want ice cream now!
Daddy: You can have your ice cream after you finish your plate. You've got to eat proper food. You wanna know what happened to [redacted] who would only eat sweets when she was a child?
Milla: Tell me.
Daddy: Well, when she grew up she'd become very fat and could not walk properly. She would only waddle along, swaying from one side to the other.
Milla: Yes, waddle along.
Daddy: That is correct. Now you finish your plate.
Milla: Bring me rye bread, too!

😃 then you and my mother are on the same page I guess.

Miro's expression is funny. I wonder what Leo is saying to him.

What a nice way to get those sweets and goodies!
Virvon, Varvon! This is really a nice rhyme!
I am going to use it to cart my spell!

Thanks!

I hope nobody in this promised land of regulation will get it in their heads that this is child labor and that the sweets are taxable income ...

Damn it, I should've been in Finland these days!
Dress up as a kid and get lots of buscets of sweets.

True. I used to rob my whole village of sweets with my friend when we were young :D

Damn, why I'm the only one who hasn't done it!
You guysssssss!!!

Can you also cast a spell on me so I won't fall asleep every 5 minutes. I have things to do... :(
And maybe send me a couple of chocolates :D

Sure that your boys had a great day a lot of wizards and little witches banish evil spirits and at the end of the day a bunch sweets sweets goodies bag as rewards, I guess they had some traditional dessert too.

Why would someone give an orange?

They didn't have candy. ;)

Okay that makes sense
