"Attempting Patience" - More Old Poetry
I wrote a lot of poetry back during my undergrad days, but once I found that I enjoyed doing fiction more, I never picked it back up (despite filling a huge notebook with well-transcribed versions along with accompanying images). Since Steemit seems to have a thriving (and growing) poetry community, I thought I'd add a little fuel to that particular fire. I hope you enjoy :)
I spent the sun letting sheets
suffocate self into soft slumber
while burying my alarm clock with the pillow.
Sun swam like sperm through every
crack within the curtain,
disco-balling the room in noontime
and preventing me from melting
out of my hangover.
I let the shower drown me,
scrubbing second guesses
off and down past the water line,
tornadoed down the drain
between toes and dead skin
as if molting happened daily.
I spent dusk upon the porch,
mid-shelf bourbon sexing rocks
as discarded wind curls from the highway
bit into my cigarette,
force-feeding ash into my eye
with every exhalation.
The alarm clock will get unplugged tonight.
Her morning war cry
keeps me up at night,
wondering where everyone’s going in such a hurry.
