"Symbiosis" - A Poem from Nearly 20 Years Ago

I wrote a lot of poetry back during my undergrad days, but once I found that I enjoyed doing fiction more, I never picked it back up (despite filling a huge notebook with well-transcribed versions along with accompanying images). Since Steemit seems to have a thriving (and growing) poetry community, I thought I'd add a little fuel to that particular fire. I hope you enjoy :)

It's the jungle rain
To a jungle beat
As the butterfly screams
Wanting to go back to its
Slumber
Within a cocoon
Woven of silky dreams
And pieces of flesh
From the trees,
Waxen from the moon's
Milky glow,
Giving even the fox
A stony visage
In his brushy den
Of hopes and fears
As his children sleep,
Dreaming of their first hunt,
Their first kill,
Their first taste of life
In the taste of death...
And the stars look to the heavens
For guidance.
