"Hubris, My Love" - A Poem from Nearly 20 Years Ago

I wrote a lot of poetry back during my undergrad days, but once I found that I enjoyed doing fiction more, I never picked it back up (despite filling a huge notebook with well-transcribed versions along with accompanying images). Since Steemit seems to have a thriving (and growing) poetry community, I thought I'd add a little fuel to that particular fire. I hope you enjoy :)

Head down, friend...
Your pride is what keeps you down.
Smoky dream showed you your end
And of course your self-made crown.

There's no doubt
That it's you against the fold;
Martyrdom comes from without,
Not inside as you've been told.

Hubris, my love....
You unleashed the beast inside
All you needed was a shove
Then swept away by power's tide.
