"Deafening, Shameless Horror of War" - A Poem from Nearly 20 Years Ago

I wrote a lot of poetry back during my undergrad days, but once I found that I enjoyed doing fiction more, I never picked it back up (despite filling a huge notebook with well-transcribed versions along with accompanying images). Since Steemit seems to have a thriving (and growing) poetry community, I thought I'd add a little fuel to that particular fire. I hope you enjoy :)
Halted cries of floors of newborns
As the death knoll rings again
in siren form.
I've taken shelter in damp, dirty cellars
And found that this is not truly living
Because it is no longer spontaneous;
I expect it now.
It is a drill played out
That has yet to lose its urgency
And I feel mortar destroy the wall beside me
As the blood flows freely from my cheek,
Glanced by a fragment blessed by wrath.
The sirens stop.
They stop singing
Their seductive song, letting us all know that
There still is no winner.
