"Dead Poet Society" - A Poem from Nearly 20 Years Ago
I wrote a lot of poetry back during my undergrad days, but once I found that I enjoyed doing fiction more, I never picked it back up (despite filling a huge notebook with well-transcribed versions along with accompanying images). Since Steemit seems to have a thriving (and growing) poetry community, I thought I'd add a little fuel to that particular fire. I hope you enjoy :)
I met a poet
Who was about to die
In a diner found in the back
Of a grocery store.
He explained to me that
He was there,
Drinking rum with Samuel Clements,
Who bought the drinks,
And saw Mark Twain's life
Pass in front of his eyes.
The wine bottle's almost empty.
The tradition has been passed.
And I'm the inheritor of a
Thousand burning lyrics
Spoken by bards who saw the future.
