Manaia : Kaum and the Great Siphoning

in #fantasy5 years ago (edited)

Kaum is city in Euchao with a population of approximately 440,000 people, located at the point where the River Sedes splits into two, with the natural river leading South to Peresi, and the canal leading East to the city of Shipeva.

The city of Kaum has an interesting history, being the location where the Great Siphoning event took place in the fifth century. Prior to this event, Shipeva had been a very small, very poor city with a modest population, and the capital of Euchao had been Peresi.

The Men of the West, believed to have emigrated from the island of Gramar, are said to have struck a secret deal with the Governor of Kaum, one by which he would grow very wealthy if he allowed them to divide the river and create a 180 mile long canal leading to Shipeva.

The ruler of Euchao at the time was Wayland Winters, who resided in Peresi. It is said that it took Wayland Winters several years to learn of the deception, by which point, Shipeva had become a thriving port and point of commerce. The Men of the West, now residing in Shipeva, had gained so much political influence by this time, that they were able to back Albert Fox to be Magna of Euchao, and Magna Wayland was soon after dethroned and exiled to the Prison Island of Zarakash. The disgraced ruler was the first ever to be exiled to the island, and had been known since as the Sleeping Magna.

Wayland Winters' last act as Magna was to have the governor of Kaum, who had betrayed him, murdered with his family, and his family name entirely removed from the historical records.

Modern day Kaum consists mostly of a Sobanite population of Subserviests, who look upon the nameless governor of history as somewhat of a hero - not only for bringing wealth and prosperity to the city of Kaum through his dealings with the Men of the West, but for taking actions that led to the Fox family reattaining the throne of Euchao, who they believe is the rightful bloodline in contrast to the Winters. In honour of his memory, a gigantic, faceless, iron statue overshadows the point of the divide in the RIver Sedes, facing towards Shipeva, with its back turned towards Peresi. The statue is known simply as "The Governor."

Like many other cities in the region, Kaum has seen an influx of bandit activity. Two raiders were recently hanged to death in the town circle, on orders of the New Governor. The practise of nameless rulers has persisted for centuries in Kaum, a further salute to the governor responsible for the Great Siphoning, and Euchao and Kaum's resulting prosperity.
