AP Physics with Hansenator - Basic Physics, Kinematics, and Forces Review
Hello Everyone! I hope all is well and you enjoy the lesson. I've been absent, but will be around again soon!
Physics Kinematics and Forces Review (What to Know Plus Examples)
Physics Basics
- Scientific Notation
Non-zero numbers always count.
Zeros before numbers never count.
Zeros after a number count if there is a decimal point.
When multiplying/dividing keep least number of significant numbers.
When adding and subtracting keep the least precise decimal place. - Dimensional Analysis
Know how to convert feet to meters, meters per second to miles per hour, etc. - The Scientific Method
Introduction/Hypothesis
Experiment/Procedures/Materials
Data/Analysis
Conclusion
Motion in 1-Dimension
- (distance = rate * time)
- (Average Velocity)
Accelerated Motion
- (Average Acceleration)
- (Used to find distance when there is acceleration)
- (Used to find instantaneous velocity/speed at a certain time)
- (Used with an average velocity and no time)
Forces in 1-Dimension
- Newton’s First Law: An object will remain at rest or in constant motion unless acted on by an outside force.
- Newton's Second Law: Force = Mass * Acceleration
- Newton's Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
- Free Body Diagrams and Equilibrium
- Review the blocks on a pulley problem!
Forces in 2-Dimensions
- Know how to add vectors in rectangular <x,y> and polar coordinates <r,θ>
- This section is basically the same as 4, but with more concepts
- Know how to break vectors up into components (the x and y directions)
- Static Friction:
If static friction is greater than the force that causes movement, no movement occurs. - Kinetic Friction:
If the kinetic friction is greater than the force that causes movement, then the object will slow down.
Motion in 2-Dimensions
- Same concepts as CH 3 with vectors
- Always break velocity up into x and y components dependent on θ
- Know velocity/acceleration in the x versus the y direction
