Does anyone else have a grandma that used to/still makes everything the long way? I say grandma because we seem to have lost that generation that made their own food... but why?

Welp, just call me gramma! You can come to me if you want something delicious made from scratch with love sprinkled into every layer!

I'm not the buy your crust at the store kind of girl. I'll make every step, no matter how long it takes because I know how good it tastes!

To be honest it all stemmed from necessity, not desire!

When I began studying nutrition outside of the confines of mass popular culture and their incredibly inaccurate food pyramids and accompanying nonsense, I realized the world we live in can make it pretty hard to eat how I want to eat.

How I want to eat is quite simply, nothing that wants to cause harm to me.

I'm more a fan of collaboration between my food and stomach than massively destructive ingredient party. That's just me.

In that analogy since we're here and it came up, let's think of your body like a battle field.

Why Cece? That doesn't sound very pleasant! What's gotten into you?

I know guys! It's not pleasant! That's why I'm typing this! You know I don't lie to you!

The reason why many bodies are currently under siege is because of all the toxic chemicals that've been welcomed in for years and years. All of those tricky pesks have gathered together inside and are fighting back.

Do you want to send in attackers or care packages?

Are you fueling the fire or are you trying to put it out?

Even if you successfully managed to get the 'situation' under control and had everyone put their hands down so no more immediate destruction were to come, the area where the havoc was taking place would be infected and devastated until restored.

How do you restore or rehabilitate devastated wasteland?
You replant, you give it love, you clean it, and most of all, you give it time to rest and rejuvenate.

Same goes for your body.

The labels on mainstream food is enough to make someone like me who has studied and researched this, shake my head in disbelief!

You all know, I'm a lover not a fighter though so my method is to teach and inspire otherwise!

If you're like my mother who tells me she doesn't care as long as it tastes good... can we just drop all the toxic crap and swap it out for stuff that tastes amazing and helps support that wonderful body of yours?

Don't let it go through any more suffering, the rescue party just dropped in!

There is a way to do things fast, on the go and there is a way to do things slow, steady and it's up to you to decide where you fit into that!

Some of the things I make from scratch:

  • Dressings
  • Sauces/condiments
  • Pickles/sauerkraut/kimchi
  • Gravies/curries
  • Milks/creams
  • Desserts
  • Bread/crust/dough etc
  • Tooth paste
  • Health products

This is certainly not an exhaustive list and sometimes when the right product comes along with ingredients I can get behind, I'll buy it!

Good news is that especially in bigger cities, this is becoming more and more common!

I promise that next time I'm inspired for a project I will go deep into this but for now, let's start with implementation!

Check labels when you're shopping to get an idea of what you're feeding yourself and family!

If you don't know what it is or if it sounds like a science experiment, it's pretty safe to say that in the case of our analogy, it's part of the enemy!

Quite simply, the less ingredients, likely the better!

I can tell you from making so many different products from scratch, you do not need "orange" in anything nor "natural flavors" nor "high fructose corn syrup" ... some new branding is making it hard but don't be too hard on yourself, just start paying attention.

Remember you vote with your dollar!

If you're like me and don't want the makings of war on the shelves of grocery stores everywhere, don't buy it.

Supply and demand 101.

If there is no demand for these products (poison) then companies would either be forced out of business or they would have to change their ethics and bbehavior to meet the demand.

Do you know that demand for vegan options increased by over 900% last year?

In that time a massive surge of businesses and products popped into the universe to meet those incoming needs.

That's the kind of power we do have!

Choose where to spend your hard earned dollars and in my humble opinion, I don't think funding the unrest going on in your body is the answer.

I have a dream of being able to eat what's being sold!

Every where I go, I'm feeling frustrated by our choices. I know better. I read the labels. I can see through the lines and I know what's pretending to be good for me and what's a real care package.

One day, I hope that I'll be able to grab a meal at the airport or a protein bar from the shelf, or some salad dressing at the super. Thing is while options are popping up where demand is high, it's not completely mainstream yet so let's ask for what we need!

Let's ask for some intervention!

Well, you know we are on the same team on this post. I buy almost 0 processed food. The bread and cheese I do buy passes the label test. I used to eat a little sausage, but haven't now for 6 months. I've actually been a careful label shopper for a long time. Over 10 years.

It's been 2 years since I had any sugar at all in my place, and that was brown. I don't even use that at all anymore. In my case, it really isn't that hard to do the right thing.

So. I'm going to Sprouts in a bit. We'll see how mainstream they've gotten. I have an unconfirmed report that they now carry the meat free burgers you've wanted me to test. We'll see.

I am getting interested in your health posts, light me up baby :-). Too many clots forming in my blood while i am vegetarian, always freshly prepared food, i don't get it, inspiration welcome

Hi, firstly, how do you know about the blood clots?
Secondly, did a quick search and your problem is not uncommon. As diet is very personal, seems worth a read to see which nutrients you may be missing.

Might be a cholesterol issue. Which reminds of the mother of an ex partner, who was on an extreme diet to bring down her cholesterol... only to find that her body then over-produced it to compensate! She ate like a mouse, but when she came to our house she gobbled up my food like a horse! Must have been all that olive oil put some brightness in her cheeks!

Honestly, sounds like needs a bit of research :-)

If that doesn't work, I'd look at the food sources, primarily the chemical residues in the vegetables.

It seems to me that so many people have lost their sense of taste!

I've been training my young daughter for a long time to tell the difference between strawberry-flavoured-yuck-milk and a real strawberry - especially a perfectly ripe one (rare)! Most of her friends seem to think that the artificial flavouring somehow tastes better.

I cook myself, most of the time.
