Two things I do a little differently. I just type "timer" into google and it pops up a 5-minute timer. I also type directly into steemit. I also rarely use a photo, don't I? So that's three things.
Please read, comment and vote (if you have voting power) on each others freewrites as much as you can. Especially if you are new to the platform, you will be surprised how many friendships are formed by reading and commenting on each other's work!
Bandwidth Problems
I know that many of you are very new to the platform and your wallets are pretty empty. Believe me, we all started there!! Here is an excellent article which explains what bandwidth is and why you might have a hard time logging in some days - or posting. Thank you @jrswab for this explanation
There are many contests on Steemit. From art to music to writing and everything in between. Enter as many as you can!! And take advantage of the free money people give away I listed in the money section below.
My wallet grew in leaps and bounds when I participated in a selfie challenge which ended up with a huge prize pot. I used all of the SBD to buy Steem and turned that into Steempower. Almost 2/3 of my steempower came and is now coming from winning contests and/or participating in giveaways. Give it a try!!

Writing help
A free app: Grammarly. A lot of us are not native English speakers and I am finding it a helpful app. It will underline spelling and grammar mistakes. Just remember that is is not always right -especially if you use complex sentence structures. Here is the link
Remember The Most Dangerous Writing App. You set the time - 5 min - and start typing. Don’t stop!!! It will destroy what you wrote if you stop for more than 3 seconds - and backspace does not count as writing on the app. If you are prone to stop and think - this app forces you to keep going. You can make corrections after the 5 minutes are over.
A timer. Egg timer is a free tool you can use on your desktop to set a time. This is useful for our freewrites or if you want to work in blocks of time and then take a break. Here is the link

The Smell From Within
Awww man... the smell from within. The smell from within the bin. That's a thing. Like if you leave it too long and you've been careless with the sorting of your waste, the juices dripping out the bag that should have been changed a week ago... mountains of cartons and pizza boxes poking out the top... just about somehow managing to... tie the knot. About to successfully carry it out the door without it leaving too much of a trace on the floor... then it drops... it's all flopped. And suddenly that smell from within, from within the bin, is everywhere. Oh dear. The smell from within can be intriguing. Because usually if it's within you can't see it... so you can't be ENITIRELY sure exactly what the smell is... so the curious part of you naturally wants to dig inside... get deeper into the smell within.. and discover what terrible sin has birthed it. Good mother earth. Maggots ?! My god. I didn't realise I was a scientist. I'm cultivating new organisms... Should I be proud or disgusted.. Well even if I wanted to be proud I can't help but be disgusted, because if you don't take out your trash... well that's just lazy. In England we call it - 'Shitting on your on doorstep' - You don't wanna do that.. because you're only gonna tred on it... and spread it everywhere... and yet again, the smell from within, will have escaped from out the bin. Well... that feels like it;s finished now... but the timer is still going so I'm just gonna keep typing and see what comes out next I guess. So today is a beautiful day. But aren't they all? I mean even the difficult days. The grey days. The torrential rainy days... They're all still beautiful. But today I'm on a lake and it's pure sunshine... I've been up all night celebrating the full moon with amazing people and love is thick and ripe within the air. There's smiles, joy and laughter... all around... everywhere... That's what I can smell within right out ♥

Haha awwww thank you.... I like to always try and infuse some sort of positivity into my writings! Important to dance with the darkness that exists too of course!

The smell from within:
When the door is open, step inside. Sniff in her vast perfume, hypnotizing to fall under spell. Magical breath, like pink bubbles or a favorite candy as a child. Even her palms hold the fragrance of the afterlife, beautifully carved out from precious ancient forest woods. These trees kissed by fairies, the smell lingers lofting on leaf tops and dewdrops. Cracking open the secret fruit revealing new dreams that linger in dark canals of the nostrils. Who knows, what wishes these smells will pollinate between heaven’s gate and the murky waters below, where no scent can ever penetrate. Submerged to the cold isolated depths without being within, her smell, like a cute grin, twinkles at the edge of her eye and chin. Something lost is sinking.
