Weekly Overview of Translation Category - Week 56, 2018
As a Community Manager for Utopian, I will continue to write these weekly reports for the translation category. The report will include:
- Translators' Activities
- Moderators' Activities
In this report, I will follow the format of the other Utopian categories to provide the following information:
- Graphs of the translators' contributions
- Graphs of language teams contributions
- Charts of comparisons of the different weeks
- Graphs of moderators' scoring
- Average score of the category & comparisons
- Showcase the staff pick of the week if there is one
- Update the Translators Members List
- Upcoming Events
Summary Overview for Week 56: Jan 17 - Jan 24, 2019
A. Contributions Summary
1. Translators' Contributions for This Week
This week, we have 48 Contributions
In the translation category, it is important that we monitor the contributions submitted by the different language teams as translators work together in teams.
Therefore, the statistics and graphs will not show the contributions of the individual translators but will display the 17 language teams instead.
The following chart shows the distribution of contributions of the 17 different language teams.
Analysis:
- Spanish team leads this week with 12 contributions.
- Followed by Serbian team with 10 contributions.
- Then Vietnamese and Arabic team.
- There are no contributions from Greek, French, Slovenian and Hebrew teams.
2. Total Contributions of 4 Weeks
We will compare the total contributions in the translation category for 4 weeks time period.
Week 53: 32 contributions
Week 54: 47 contributions
Week 55: 39 contributions
Week 56: 48 contributions
There is an increase of contributions this week which is encouraging to see. It has not reached its potential yet. Perhaps in the weeks to come, we can expect more and more contributors from the translators.
3. Four Weeks Comparisons for Each Language Team
The following table shows the number of contributions in the different language teams for 4 weeks.
Analysis:
- There are 4 color bars for each language teams with each bar representing the 4 different weeks.
- The following teams show signs of increasing engagement: Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Serbian
- The following teams show signs of getting less engaged: Greek, French, Slovenian and Hebrew
The Arabic and Germans have been restructured in the last month, so it is a good sign to see their teams increasing in their contributions steadily.
4. Overall Growth of Each Language Team for 4 weeks
It is important that we measure the language team activities not just by one week but to see their monthly overall performance.
The following graph shows the total number of contributions of the 17 language teams in the past 4 weeks
Analysis
From the chart, we are able to see the situation of each language team in the spread of 4 weeks:
- Spanish & Serbian teams are most active in a consistent manner
- Followed by the Vietnamese and Portuguese teams
- And then Filipino, Chinese and Italian teams
- There is little growth in Greek, French, Slovenian and Hebrew teams
From here, we will need to find out what is happening to translators who are not active and their reasons for inactivity.
B. Language Moderators' Scoring - Week 56
For the scoring distribution, we have 27 moderators, so I need to group the scoring into language teams so that you can see the analysis clearer in the distribution of scoring.
1. Chart showing the distribution of scores
The X-axis is not able to list out all the languages for each score and only able to list out the language for every other 2 scores shown.
2. Analysis
- The highest score this week is 86 given by the Italian moderator.
- The lowest score this week is 17 given by the Portuguese moderator.
- About 30% of the contributions receive scores between 80 to 90
- About 30% of the contributions receive scores between 70 to 80
- About 40% of the contributions receive scores below 70.
The scores of the new questionnaire are able to reflect the quality of the translation in a better spectrum. We want all translators to get a score above 70 for quality control. Only 60% of translators meet the standard.
Contributions that are lower than 70 need remedial training. With 40% contributions receiving a score lower than 70, we need to upgrade the quality of our translators.
3. The average score of the Contributions is 70.
Last week, the average score was 74.
This week, there is a descrease in the quality of the translation work.
Since these translators have all been screened to do translation work, the average score should be above 70 to show the quality standard.
So far, we are making the minimal standard.
C. Staff Pick This Week
Unfortunately, there is no staff pick this week.
D. Translation Teams - 104 Members List
Please note: Some restructuring for the following teams were made this week:
- Spanish team
- Portuguese team
- 2 Spanish translators were removed for inactivity.
- 2 translators were added
- Let's welcome @rositaumce to the Spanish team
- Let's welcome @warnas to the Portuguese team
E. Upcoming Events - Interviewing the Serbian Team Translators
It has been quiet these days, so I will start interviewing the translators to get some conversation and engagement going for the DaVinci platform.
Since Serbian team has active translators translating in a consistent manner week by week, I an still in the process of interviewing the 3 Serbian translators. This will take some time before I am able to post their interviews.
That's it for this week,
Rosa

Hello Rosa!
Thank you for providing the Translations category update. It's great to see such growth in the influx of contributions to the category. So cool! But that also means some contribution could payout without a vote from Utopian. Well, our maxim remains 'Utopian vote is not guaranteed'. It could be a little bit discouraging for contributors, but the fact is: The best quality gets the vote. I hope the 40% contributors would improve the quality of their submissions.
The Greek team used to be among the active team in the category. It's surprising that their activities reduced drastically. Do you have any information about them?
Please note that while the CM hasn't changed the footer, I am not scoring #iamutopian posts based on the questionnaire. They have their own metric, and that will be the case until we go live with the new guidelines and new questionnaire, which will be comprehensive enough to reflect these types of posts.
Your contribution has been evaluated according to Utopian policies and guidelines, as well as a predefined set of questions pertaining to the category.

Thank you for your review, @tykee! Keep up the good work!
Hello @louis88, thanks for giving us your feedback. Yes, the German team translators got rebuilt not too long ago and we are excited to have the German translators on board. Sorry to hear about the 2 projects that did not get upvoted. It is difficult because you spend so much time working on the translation. On the same note, we noticed the same thing happened to some of the translators in the Chinese, Spanish and Filipino group too. We will reflect this situation to Utopian to bring this to their attention. Great to know that your motivation is there.

Currently, we (Serbian Team) can produce up to 12 translations/week. In reality, it will be about 8-10.
@alexs1320 actually the Serbian translators are the hardest working team even though Spanish team is leading in the number of contributions. There are only 5 of you as compared to the 10 translators in Spanish team. Thanks for all your hardwork.
Let's take advantage of the fact that payouts will be paid in sbd starting this week 💪

@utopian-io should halt the addition of new members to the Spanish team until a solution is found for the upvote problem.
Just these last 15 days there have been 10+ contributions from my team of translators that did not get upvoted.
