My first trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Irkutsk to Krasnoyarsk (Part 21)
With the Baikal-Express from Irkutsk to Krasnoyarsk
My train is called and my first railway trip starts. The train is very long, I do not know so long trains from Germany. And it is not easy to get in, with the ticket in my hand, they see that I do not know what to do, and a conductor takes the ticket and goes with me 3 or 5 wagons and then hands it to one of her colleagues. She leads me into the train and shows me my place. Each car has its own staff!

Mein Zug wird aufgerufen und mein erster Eisenbahntrip beginnt. Der Zug ist sehr lang, so was kenne ich nicht aus Deutschland. Und einfach einsteigen geht auch nicht, mit dem Ticket in der Hand sieht man mir an, dass ich nicht weiß was ich tun soll und eine Schaffnerin nimmt das Ticket und geht mit mir 3 oder 5 Waggons weiter und übergibt es dann einer ihrer Kolleginnen, die mich dann in den Zug führt und mir meinen Platz zeigt. Jeder Waggon hat sein eigenes Personal!
The Baikal Express is a part of the Trans-Siberian railroad, my journey goes from Irkutsk at km 5185 and ends in Krasnoyarsk at km 4098 distance to Moscow, time inside the train is Moscow time and that is 6 hours different to the local time. In Krasnoyask it will be 4 hours.
Der Baikal-Express ist ein Teilstück auf der Transsibirischen Eisenbahn, meine Fahrt geht von Irkutsk bei km 5185 und endet in Krasnoyarsk bei km 4098, Entfernung nach Moskau, im Zug selbst gilt die Moskauer Zeit und die ist 6 Stunden unterschiedlich zur lokalen Irkutsker Zeit. Bei der Ankunft in Krasnoyarsk sind es dann 4 Stunden Unterschied.
After a few minutes the train starts to move. In my compartment we are now four: an older woman, two men and I. Immediately, the table is unfolded and all the edible is spread out. We are now a family, is being explained to me, and everything belongs to everyone, so eat, talk and fun for the next few hours are secured.
Nach wenigen Minuten geht es auch schon los. In meinem Abteil sind wir nun zu viert: Eine ältere Frau, zwei Männer und ich. Sofort wird sich vorgestellt, der Tisch ausgeklappt und alles Essbare darauf verteilt. Wir sind nun eine Familie wird mir erklärt, und alles gehört jedem, also essen, reden und viel Spaß für die nächsten Stunden sind sicher.
Outside, the birch forests rush by, villages, many curves in which the train slows down. I drink one tea after another because the bags are cheap and the hot water is free anyway. You can even smoke in the carriages, and this is a pleasure: first, there is no heating, second, the Russians smoke very much, so the window is naturally up, and thirdly, the parts under the feet ar moving at the curves. For smoking I get little time, I am constantly involved in conversations, the mood in this train I can only describe with very friendly. It's really fun to be here. Every few hours the train stops for a few minutes, new travelers enter, sellers at the railway try to offer their goods. Once we can even leave the station to shop in the surrounding shops.
Draußen rasen die Birkenwälder vorbei, ab und zu ein Dorf, viele Kurven und dann entsprechend langsame Fahrt. Ich trinke einen Tee nach dem anderen, denn die Beutel gibt es ganz billig und das heiße Wasser ist sowieso umsonst. Sogar rauchen darf man in den Zwischenteilen der Waggons, und das ist ein Vergnügen: erstens gibt es dort keine Heizung, zweitens rauchen die Russen sehr viel, also ist das Fenster natürlich auf, und drittens bewegen sich die Teile unter den Füßen wenn mal wieder eine Kurve ansteht. Zum Rauchen komme ich wenig, ich werde ständig in Gespräche verwickelt, die Stimmung die in diesem Zug kann ich nur mit sehr freundlich beschreiben. Es macht richtig Spaß hier zu sein. Alle paar Stunden bleibt der Zug für ein paar Minuten stehen, neue Reisende kommen herein, Verkäufer am Bahngleis versuchen ihre Waren anzubieten. Einmal dürfen wir sogar den Bahnhof verlassen um in den umliegenden Geschäften einzukaufen.
Shortly before sunset, the female actresses bring the bedding, and gradually the beds fold out, and calmness spreads out in the train.
Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang bringen die Schaffnerinnen das Bettzeug und nach und nach klappen die Betten heraus und Ruhe kehrt in den Zug ein.

That is a great trip! I did the Moscow to Beijing (around Mongolia) trip, over 9000 km train travelling in 2001, it was awesome! Enjoy it!

Do you know Russian? How did you communicate with your fellow travelers? It seems to be a long and tiring traveling by train
Yes, I speak enough for traveling alone, getting all tickets, making concerts and lectures in the university. Not perfect, but it is ok. I have learned it for 3 years every day. It was so hard.

Da haste aber die Holzklasse gebucht! :-) Nächstes mal statt "plackartny" eher "kupe" nehmen - da schläfst Du wie ein Baby und der Tee wird Dir ans Bett gebracht!
Damals hatte ich noch kein Steem :) Ist dir eigentlich klar was die erste Klasse kostet? Dafür kaufe ich mir lieber was schönes :) Und die Mitreisenden sind auch deutlich angenehmer als in der ersten Klasse, ich bin mal durchgelaufen und habe sie gesehen. In meiner Klasse trinkt man eine Flasche Wodka zu viert, in der ersten muß man sie alleine trinken :)
Du hast in Russland immer drei Klassen normalerweise. Plackartny - das sind die offenen Abteile. Da ist zugegebenermaßen immer mordsmäßig was los. Hab ich anfangs auch gemacht, bis ich mal in eine Schlägerei geraten bin, als zwei Besoffene gepokert hatten und einer von beiden die Uhr seines verstorbenen Vaters verspielt hatte. War dann nicht mehr so lustig. Dann hast Du "kupe" - zweite Klasse mit Vier-Bett-Wagen, aber die sind geschlossen. Für normale Teilnehmer am Rechtsverkehr. Da ist auch einiges los, aber da kann man wenigstens seinen Rausch ausschlafen. Und für die dicken Fische gibt's noch "ljuks" - das ist wirklich Luxus. Aber saulangweilig.
Der Zug von Krasnojask nach Abakan war dann wohl die Holzklasse, das kommt noch :)
Du scheinst dich ja richtig gut auszukennen in Russland, warst du öfters dort? Und wo?
Russland, meine alte Liebe :-) War viel im europ. Teil unterwegs bis Volgograd und hoch bis Murmansk, in Sibirien nur in der Gegend von Chabarovsk bis Komsomolsk. Komme aber, wenn überhaupt, in letzter Zeit nur nach Moskau.
Schade. Wenn ich groß und stark bin, dann ziehe ich nochmal paar Monate los ...

Nice man! I like that there are these sellers coming from the stations, that's kind of fun! Also it most be unique to sit in a train and suddenly you share everything with strangers at the table, I would love to try that!
