With the shamanka in the countryside

Donnerstag: Nach dem Frühstück und einem kurzen Besuch im Internetcafe mache ich mich auf den Weg. Vorbei am Zirkus, den es in fast jeder großen Stadt gibt, schlendere ich gemütlichst zum Haus Kulakovskowo.

Thursday: After breakfast and a short visit to the Internetcafe, I am on the way. Past the circus, which is in almost every big city, I stroll comfortably to the house Kulakovskowo.

Na also, das nenne ich mal interessant, das klingt doch gut.

Well, that's what I call interesting, that sounds good.

Mit Swetlana, der Chefin der Agentur, geht es dann hinaus auf Land. Inder Nähe von Jakutsk verlassen wir dann die normale Straße und biegen in den Wald ein.

With Svetlana, the director of the agency, it goes out into the country. Near Yakutsk we leave the normal road and turn into the forest.

Ein paar mal links und rechts, vor und zurück, und wir sind da. Wir wurden per Telefon navigiert.

A few times left and right, back and forth, and we are there. We were navigated by phone.

Darf ich vorstellen: Soya, die Udaganka. Sie ist zu Besuch bei ihrer Schwester und unser Treffen wurde von langer Hand vorbereitet, da sie mich unbedingt kennenlernen wollte, sie hatte von meiner Arbeit in den Jahren zuvor gehört und ist neugierig geworden was es mit dem Schamanen aus Deutschland auf sich hat.

May I introduce: Soya, the Udaganka. She is visiting her sister and our meeting was prepared by a long hand because she wanted to get to know me, she had heard about my work in the years before and was curious about what is going on with the shaman from Germany.

Mich hat fast der Schlag getroffen als ich dieses Häuschen besucht habe, es hatte plus 35 Grad da drinnen!

I met almost fainted when I visited this house, it was plus 35 degrees in there!

Natürlich muß erst mal etwas gegessen werden, zu meinem Erstaunen erfahre ich dass Soya nur Tee trinkt und Fleisch ißt, sonst nichts. Sie stammt aus Nordviluisk, weit im Norden Jakutiens, ist etwa 60 Jahre alt und eine der bekanntesten Schamanin des Landes. Ihre Mutter ist mit 115 Jahren einfach über Nacht gestorben, ihr Vater mit 104 Jahren (Bild ganz unten). So ganz ungesund kann Fleischessen also nicht sein. Und im weiteren Verlauf des Tages verstehe ich auch was es damit auf sich hat. Sie ist wie ein Otter, quicklebendig, lustig, immer am lachen, einfach aussergewöhnlich aktiv. Wir tauschen Geschenke aus und dann fahren wir wieder zurück in die Stadt um unsere Sachen zu holen: Sie ihr Kostüm und ich meine Instrumente. Und wie im Nichts sind wir wieder zurück.

Of course, something must be eaten. To my astonishment, I learn that Soya only drinks tea and meat, nothing else. She comes from northern Viluisk, far north in Yakutia, is about 60 years old and one of the best known shaman in the country. Her mother died with 115 years simply overnight, her father with 104 years (picture at the bottom). Meat-eating can not be so unhealthy. And in the further course of the day I also understand why. She is like an otter, fast-paced, funny, always laughing, just exceptionally active. We exchange gifts and then we go back to the city to get our things: her costume and my instruments. And in nothingness we are back again.

Nun geht es richtig los. Ich beginne mit meinem Konzert. Meine erstes Stück ist die Reise zur Sonne, und ohne große Worte wird diese Energie aufgenommen. Mit diesem Lied beginne ich alle Konzerte, und auch dieses Mal darf jeder erzählen was erlebt wurde, welche Bilder entstanden sind, ich erkläre dann die Bedeutung und es geht weiter. Das Wasserstück ist ein spezielles Lied welches alle Körperflüssigkeiten harmonisiert. Und nach diesem Lied sprudelt es aus der Schamanin nur so heraus. Ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich alle Details wiedergeben soll, nur soviel, sie hatt drei Kinder verloren, und bei dem Stück hat sie sich mit ihnen verbunden und sie in Frieden heimbegleitet. Ich kann recht viel verstehen und frage einfach nach wenn es problematisch wird, mit viel Geduld wird es mir dann erklärt. Sie erklärt mir wie diese Musik bei ihr wirkt und sie läd mich ein ihr Dorf zu besuchen um allen Menschen dort diese Harmonie und Kraft zu geben. Dieser Besuch steht noch aus, aber ich hoffe eines Tages dorthin reisen zu können.

Now it's really starting. I start with my concert. My first piece is the journey to the sun, and without great words this energy is absorbed. With this song I start all the concerts, and everyone is allowed to tell me what happened, what pictures were seen, I explain the meaning and it goes on. The water piece is a special song that harmonizes all body fluids. And after this song, it only bubbles out of the shaman. I'm not sure if I should give back all the details, only that much, she has lost three children, and during the music she has been with them and accompanied them peacefully. I can understand quite a lot and just ask if it becomes problematic, with a lot of patience it is then explained to me. She tells me how this music works with her and she invites me to visit her village to give all the people there that harmony and strength. This visit is still not done, but I hope to travel there one day.

Ganz feierlich öffnet sich plötzlich die Tür und sie steht im Kostüm da:

Mit einer Glocke und dem Pferdewedel wandelt sie herein, und schlagartig verwandelt sich der Raum in eine heilige Zelle. Mit fremder Stimme, in alter Sprache, teils gesungen teils gesprochen werden die Geister um Beistand gebeten um den weiteren Verlauf des Rituals zu ermöglichen. Zusamme gehen wir nach draussen, wo sie eine Sonnenanrufung macht. Das verstehe ich alles ohne etwas zu verstehen. Die Sonne als das wichtigste Objekt der Jakuten, ist Gegenstand aller Arten von Ritualen, Gesängen und Tänzen. Jetzt wird sie für mich ein spezielles Ritual machen und ich darf meine Jacke ausziehen. Wärend die anderen im schützenden Pelzmantel dastehen bin ich im T-Shirt nun ganz der Strahlung der Sonne ausgesetzt. Und mir ist nicht kalt. Ich lerne die Energie der Sonne kennen, sie aufzunehmen, sie zu speichern. Die Gestik der Udaganka wird von Maultrommel und Gesang begleitet, für mich ist es eine Reise in eine andere Zeit.

With a bell and the horse's tail she walks in, and the space suddenly changes into a sacred cell. With a strange voice, in old language, partly sung in part, the spirits are asked for assistance in order to enable the further course of the ritual. We go outside, where she makes a call to the sun. I understand this without understanding anything. The Sun as the most important object of the Yakuts, is the subject of all kinds of rituals, songs and dances. Now she will make a special ritual for me and I can take off my jacket. While the others are standing in the protective fur coat I am now exposed in the T-shirt to the radiation of the sun. And I'm not cold. I get to know the energy of the sun, to take it, to save it. The gesture of the Udaganka is accompanied by maultrommel and singing, for me it is a trip to another time.

Zum Abschluß essen wir noch mal und singen schließlich mein neues Lied, das ich in nicht lange zuvor in Irland erfunden hatte, und es stellt sich heraus, dass es ein norjakutisches ist. Damit ist das Band der Kulturen endgültig geknüpft und viele meiner Vermutungen gelangen zu Gewissheit. Es gibt ein kollektives Gedächtnis, irgendwie kann es aktiviert werden, und die Musik ist mein Weg es zu versuchen.

Finally, we eat again and finally sing my new song, which I had invented not long before in Ireland, and it turns out that it is a northern yakutian. Thus, the bond of cultures is definitively knotted, and many of my conjectures reach certainty. There is a collective memory, somehow it can be activated, and the music is my way of trying it.
