Stay? Or Leave?

We all know what happens when Steem goes down, right? Suddenly, the platform becomes very quiet. The ones still posting seem to be writing and formatting and taking awesome pictures for their own pleasure.

But this is not a question about what the masses do - but what I would do.

Well, I don't consider myself a big earner at this point, but I justify the time I am spending on the platform with the possibility of a future higher reward.

With that incentive gone, I could not spend the same amount of time here as I am doing presently.

Of course, there are many platforms which do not have any kind of monetary reward structure. But they are very easy to use and have many features that Steemit at this time is lacking. To stay active without the money incentive might also depend on how improved the platform is at that point.

Is it easy to communicate? Does it fulfill the need for private groups and other features people can utilize right now on platforms like Facebook to promote their businesses? Is it easy for others to join?

All of those factors would play a role in my decision making.

That said, I have made friends here and created a bit of a following with the freewrite initiative. Many of the freewriters are newbies and do not make much of an income. They are on the platform for other reasons. I doubt that the majority of them would leave if there was suddenly no more payout.

I, in turn, would at least stay active for that community and continue to present the daily prompt and interact with the writers.

That said, my time spent on the platform would need to be cut by at least 3/4.

Let's hope that no payout is not what is in the future for Steemit - but better tools and ways to interact on the platform are.

I'd like to think I'm dedicated enough to stick around without rewards, but the reality is that I have a lot of other stuff going on in my life that takes a hit from me being here so much. I have a part time job that I can do from home on my own time, as well as a tutoring business, and I'm not putting in as many hours as I'm allowed to or recruiting new clients to tutor. I justify spending so much time here because there's a possibility of future rewards (even if the rewards right now aren't exactly huge). However, since I already write a lot, I might come back every once in a while to share something I'm working on, but I wouldn't be as engaged in the community as I am now.

I think the sticking around depends a lot on how many others will. Let's hope we don't need to test it out.

I participated on many sites that paid initially and then the rewards dropped off and everyone fell off. It would be no surprise to me that the majority would slowly fall off and look for something else that would pay. I love steemit and I love the community. I would find it very difficult to fill my life with something else after investing a year of my life in this platform. Is an interesting question and I have grown a lot and ways that are not monetary. Good post!

I am with you. I have seen a lot of sides come and go. And usually, when the money goes down - people are looking for something else...

It's true, the financial rewards are the only part of Steemit that truly sets it apart. The community is wonderful, but I think even the newbies would abandon the site if that aspect were gone. It's what drew people here in the first place, and there are many other places to keep the community going. I can imagine I'd stop by occasionally, like I do with livejournal and blogspot, but not with even an ounce of the regularity I do here. I think of this as a part-time job.

I fear that you are right. Most people would leave. But if the site becomes user-friendly and useful, others might come on. I am sure that most everyone would be here a lot less.

Luckily, I don't think there's any plan to cease the payout structure.

I like your take on the subject - very honest, and very smart. If one is looking to Steemit for any type of income in the future, then it stands to reason that they cannot conceivably spend as much time here as they do now with zero payout when they could be working a "normal" job for cash flow.

People can't afford it for the most part. We all have to eat...

Based on the cool people I've already met on Steemit, I find more pleasure here than I ever did on Squidoo or Hubpages. I would still right on steemit and hope to get decent backlinks out of the deal for SEO/Google-purposes, but I would have to give up some of my time to find other ways to earn. Being disabled, I earn/eat based on what I make. Crypto, cash, whatever. If it hadn't been for @curie doing a driveby on my pinball article, I would have never broken $3.00. First time for everything, I guess. Great thought provoking question, as usual.

The SEO and google ratings are a good thing to consider...
Curie has given a lot of newbies hope - that is for sure!!!

I'd stay, I wouldn't be putting in as much time but I'd def stay because I am a writer, satirical bloggin weirdo and love my friends on here...

We do have great friends on here - that is for sure!!!

I think this particular subject caused each one of us who participated to take a healthy look at ourselves and really determine what we would need in order to stay. And, I would say most have come to the same conclusion as you (I know I did), that staying around, at least as much as we do, would be a difficult thing without at least the opportunity for rewards.

And I don't personally have a problem with that. If Steemit or any of the other current apps had some killer unique features that made doing something, whatever it might be, just the best experience ever, then maybe, just maybe, we spend a little more time for that. But regardless, our time is still diminished.

Hopefully, though, we're safe from such a happenstance. Better yet, let's just have STEEM go up like it is doing now. :)

Is it going up? I better look! and I think we are in 100% agreement.
Even though I have gained a lot of skills since being here, if it all went puff, I would be disappointed, to say the least...
