7 Pieces of Miltary Tech that Will Blow Your Mind

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

It is not an uncommon belief that military technology is much further developed than what is available for public use. Theories behind sites such as Area 51 suggest this. I recently acquired a Popular Science Magazine entitled Popular Science: The Future of Military Tech. Here are 7 Pieces of Military Tech that will blow your mind:

7. Hover Bike

Exploration of this idea began in 2014. This bike's official name is JTARV, or "Joint Tactical Aerial Resupply Vehicle". This vehicle is meant so soldiers can someday order resupply on the battlefield, and rapidly receive it. Though it can fly higher, the bike is mainly meant to hover about 10 feet off of the ground/water, and travel up to 60mph. This video is of the JTARV flying.

6. Killer Robots

The idea of a robot with the purpose of killing is one we've been familiar with ever since the movie Terminator. Now, that idea is becoming a reality, with The Super aegis II, a South Korean made gun turret that can recognize, and shoot a target at the will of an operator. It is projected that the United States is about a decade from having the technology to build an independent killing machine. There is much debate about whether or not we should work to achieve this, or work to keep others from not achieving it. Personally, I think technology will and should advance, with or without the help of the United States.

5. "Magic" Bullets

"Magic" Bullets, or EXACTO (Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance), can adjust course (change direction) twice, and adjust to a moving target, or fixed target (if the user missed). These bullets are designed for combat in rural areas of Afghanistan. There is little information known about these bullets, but it is likely that these bullets will not emerge in the lives of private citizens for quite some time.

4. Stealth Tanker

The Air Force is exploring the possibility of a tanker (meant for refueling air craft) that is stealthy. The distance a plane can go is determined by how much fuel it can carry. Recently, it has become possible to refuel in the air, but this is best done in ally airspace, unless. . . a tanker is also a stealth craft. Sadly, a stealth tanker would be quite expensive, and the air force is not projected to have the budget for one until 2030, or 2035.

3. Augmented Reality Eyewear

Often, divers are unable to see what they are doing, due to the dark and murky waters on the sea floor. With this smart eye wear, soon to be incorporated by the U.S Navy, a diver no longer needs to follow the instructions of an operator. Now, a 3D model of the area can be displayed on the glasses, giving the diver a reference to look at. They will be able to see what's around them and what tasks they have through a virtual model, projected through seemingly transparent glasses with mirrors.

2. Exoskeleton

For those who have played call of duty Advanced Warfare, this concept is quite similar. This suit is designed to enhance a soldier's abilities on the battlefield, and protect them from harm. In this video, the army evaluates the Warrior Web exoskeleton.

1. Chip Implant

This chip, or NESD (Neural Engineering System Design) is chip meant to be implanted into the users brain. This chip, in theory, will translate the user's neuro impulses into 0s and 1s for a computer to understand, and the computer's response/statement into neuro impulses for the user to understand. This, in theory, would allow the user to communicate with a computer just by thinking. Surprisingly, this technology already exists. Currently, brain-computer interfaces work in 100 to 1,000 neurons at a time. Such a project as NESD would connect with up to a million neurons. This communication allows for an increase in a soldier's senses, and computer knowledge. It also could combat diseases such as Parkinson's, blindness, and increase the efficiency of prosthetics.

Thanks for reading this! This is my second post in @dragosroua's 30 day challenge. My question to you for discussion, do you think we should advance technology, or advance security against advancing technology? Make sure to check back later!

I would like to have a hover bike to avoid heavy trafic! Thanks for article!

Indeed mind blowing technologies...but the only bigger question is how much expenditure on military is good for the society?

Here's a hint, if war is still happening, then we're not spending enough.

Wow, this is so cool! Never had any idea most of this existed. Thanks for the post!

Awesome!
But you forgot about them lasers.
High power mega-watt lasers are being developed that can melt incoming missiles in 1.5-2.5 seconds.

Wow! That's cool!

Definitely mind blowing. In the wrong hands, the magic bullets and the robot gun are a bit worrisome. The hoverbike, and the augmented reality eyeware are just really cool. The brain-computer interface seems like it has amazing potential for both good and harm. I certainly like the idea of curing Parkinson's disease, but as it becomes more powerful and communications flow in both directions, the potential for abuse must also be considered.

I guess there's a reason why we have a millenia-old cliche about the double-edged sword.

Then you'd just have to avoid being shot down by the military (Unidentified Bogie).

But what if I want to fly my Iron Man suit near war zones?

I'm waiting for organic neurochips and chips that can be implanted by breathing in or injecting. I guess that NSA also waiting for those time to come. Someone can say it's impossible but this is our bright future folks.
